6 weeks PP, bright red bleeding from bum - fissure? How to heal it?

Delightful post, sorry!

I’m 6 weeks postpartum but had a C section so not sure if this is relevant.

Yesterday I was slightly constipated and felt a sharp pain in my bum when pooing (TMI sorry!). There was a small amount of red blood but nothing concerning.

This morning, another bowel movement but not constipated, and suddenly what looked like A LOT of very bright red blood, on the paper and in the bowl. This happened again when I next went to the loo, although not for a poo, but the blood still came out (definitely from back passage, not from anywhere else).

I think I’ve let myself get dehydrated with BFing which may have caused the constipation and I think this is ‘just’ an anal fissure as a result. My question is, if so, how on earth do I get rid of it?! I have laxido sachets still from the hospital - should I take those and drink a tonne of water and eat a tonne of fruit? Will it go away on its own? Have I broken my bum? This didn’t even happen with the dreaded first post-CS poo!

Thank you for any advice. Motherhood is so glamourous 🙃🤦‍♀️

Contact the GP, I needed a special cream to heal mine.
Try soaking your bum in Epsom salts for 20 minutes a day to help it heal and keep it clean.
Plenty of water to drink, you should be having a glass every time you BF. And prunes for constipation, take 8 a day until your poo is soft.

Speak to the pharmacy and get a stool softener, dulcoEASE (not dulcolax) is good but not sure if you can have that, or Laxido, when BF. I had the same issue, resolved once the constipation resolved, you’ve haven’t broken your bum forever.
Whole kiwi fruit (including skin!), 2 per day, is great for constipation, as are dates and chia seeds (Google internal shower lol). Add them all to your diet daily.
Congratulations on your new arrival.

Thank you, both! I still have some laxido and I’ll get down to the pharmacist too before trying the GP.

Admittedly my diet’s been crap as well because I get so hungry and just need food NOW plus having to do everything one-handed/with a newborn means I’m just grabbing the nearest rubbish to eat. Must do better! Thank you for your help!

Ugh man, I just looked with a mirror and wish I hadn’t! I think it’s piles 😑 can this happen even if I never went into labour (ELCS)? Will anusol cream and suppositories make my bum go back to looking normal again or will it always look like this?!

Does sound painful, some good advice though.Congrats on your new arrival.Hope you feel better soon.

I got piles from my first delivery, and they’ve never gone, they trouble me occasionally so I keep the suppositories and cream in at all times.
But if you have a fissure you may need special cream for that.

mikado1 · 19/12/2024 07:21

Piles was my first thought. I had no idea these were coming pp! Anusol sorted them, ice and sudocrem soothed. You'll get it sorted quickly. 💐
