Fed up of loss of appetite and repulsion to food

Crumplesock · 17/12/2024 13:25

I've slowly, over past month, loss my appetite and this past week it's got to the stage where I'm predominantly repulsed by food and thought of eating.

I'm forcing myself to eat but I don't want to and have lost weight

Food used to be my passion, I'd get excited about making my lunches for work, creating and enjoying delicious dinners.

I feel really sad about it and I miss enjoying my food and it's sort of like I've lost part of my personality.

Had anyone else had experience with this? Generally speaking I'm a pretty healthy 30yr old.

I had this, it was depression

Crumplesock · 17/12/2024 13:41

I don't feel depressed though, I'm engaging well with all my other activities, performing well at work, excited about Christmas and making plans etc.

Yes me. Used to love food but gone off it now. Started in my 40s. I'm early 50s now. I get hungry but often can't think of anything I can bear to eat.

Gertrudesinthegutter · 17/12/2024 13:43

And you’re not going to your GP over this because?

I would have thought loss of weight and appetite warrants a visit.

SilenceInside · 17/12/2024 13:48

I also think you need to run this past your GP as unexpected weight loss and total lack of appetite could be the symptoms of many different issues some of which are serious.

DecayingRelic · 17/12/2024 13:53

I too thought I was functioning, I would not have said that I was depressed, I went to GP as I was dizzy and had lots LOADs of weight, I just did not want to eat, I was feeling anxious though

Crumplesock · 17/12/2024 13:53

I've not gone to the GP as I do feel well beyond the loss of appetite

Yeah I'd see the GP personally

Fordian · 17/12/2024 14:06

GP. A loss of taste and/or smell (closely related) can indicate conditions that need investigation.

whyhere · 17/12/2024 16:40

Please see your GP as a matter of urgency.

MagpiePi · 17/12/2024 16:53

I had a similar thing about 2 months ago the ago. I was also only getting about 4 hours of broken sleep at night, but still feeling energetic during the day. It lasted for about a month. I assumed it was a stomach bug or viral thing.
I did coincidentally see the GP about HRT things (am in perimenopause) and she thought it could have been a hormone surge of some sort.
Everything is back to normal now.

I’m not saying ignore it though.

FadedRed · 17/12/2024 16:55

As pp’s advised, you need to see your GP about this.

Thedogstolemyheatedblanket · 17/12/2024 16:57

You do need to see the GP. At least do an e consult

BobbyBiscuits · 17/12/2024 17:05

That sounds quite sad. I hope you can get over it.
There must be some sort of trigger?

Can you think of anything? If it's a physical thing then do see the GP.

The thing is the less you eat, the more difficult it becomes. You get to the point where you feel like you're never hungry, and eating can actually feel like it's bruising or hurting your mouth. Your stomach shrinks, so feeling full can be uncomfortable.

Please try and gradually build up what you're eating. Just day by day.

If you want treat foods like chocolates, sweets, whatever you fancy just have them. Milkshakes, hot chocolate, things like that are tasty and easy to consume.
Soups and stews, just a little, maybe scrambled egg...I'm just guessing but I like those when I'm not feeling well.

You can get supplement like ensure compact which are very small but calorie dense. If you're worried about your weight getting too low.

If you love eating out, then invite your best mate for a meal. If you prefer eating alone, get yourself your favourite takeaway. And just eat what you can, nice and slowly.

Also take a good multivitamin and mineral if you're not getting much nutrition.

I hope things improve for you x

Crumplesock · 17/12/2024 19:44

Thank you everyone.

I'll see if I can get to the GP, just is impossible isn't it and I always feel silly going there (last time I went I kept being dismissed and being told I'm just aging so should expect stomach pains, bloating, hives etc, ended up going private and got diagnosed with an egg and milk allergy which solved all my issues).

BobbyBiscuits · 18/12/2024 02:19

@Crumplesock do you think it could be another allergy? Definitely see the GP as they'll want to do a blood test. Then they can see what you're lacking or if you need a specialist.
Do you actually feel like it hurts when you swallow? Stomach ache straight after any food? Or just loss of appetite? Change in BM?
I hope you get to the bottom of it and feel better soon x

I have had the same as this, it is taking a while to lift. I would be more worried but someone in my family has had the same. It has really impacted my appetite and sometimes I am starving and other times I have to force myself to eat. It is really random. Obvs none of us know what it is for you OP, so if you are concerned I would go to GP.

Havalona · 18/12/2024 20:56

I had the same, for months and it was an ulcer. No other symptoms, felt well but could not face food. It came from H Pylori infection and once treated i came back to normal. I survived on high protein yogurt, actimel and yakult before diagnosis.

Crumplesock · 22/12/2024 16:01

Actually the only other thing that has been really bothering me for the past 2 months is this lump that won't heal..... approx 2cm in diameter
