Friends baby is 8 months old and weighs 35lb - 2 1/2 stone... is this a serious concern or just a big baby

She needs to see a doctor

tink123 · 01/05/2008 09:21

That is ridiculously overweight, she needs to be seen by an endocrine specialist to rule out any hormonal conditions. That will be putting a strain on their heart.

This s what I thought -no one seems to be doing anything though - she seems quite proud IYKWIM?

He weighs slightly less than her 5 year old daughter

Is the baby obviously fat or just a very tall and chunky baby?

geordieminx · 01/05/2008 09:25

Fat?

Not tall, was just over 10lb at birth I think?

the top weight on chart for a baby that age is 23lbs. Baby is way over that. Has the hv not seen the baby??

Mawma · 01/05/2008 09:34

My ds at at 9m was 11.08kg which was 24lb 6oz he was always on the 91st centile but had gone up to the 98th centile at 9m, the health visitor was concerned and had marked it on his baby record book, however at 9 1/2m he started walking and was always on the go, he dropped back to the 91st centile and health visitor said it was absolutely fine. So i would say if the health visitor was concerned about my ds being on the 98th centile then your friends baby must be way off the growth/scale charts.

schneebly · 01/05/2008 09:37

That is very big - think she needs to see doc or HV. My very sturdy 3 year old weighs about that!

pooka · 01/05/2008 09:41

My nearly 5year old dd weighs about 35 pounds! And is on about the 25th centile for weight (50th for height).

How is the baby fed? Bf or formula? What solid foods does she feed the baby?

Not as extreme, but I remember a very chubby toddler (aged about 4) at ds' "Ducklings" swimming class, whose mother thought her ds still needed full fat milk, and lots of it.

wannaBe · 01/05/2008 09:53

that is not normal. She needs to see a gp and asap.

mankymummy · 01/05/2008 09:54

My 2+8 year old is only that heavy.

What are the rest of the family like, are they big?

geordieminx · 01/05/2008 10:38

rest of family are slim, she's about 5 foot 8 but size 10. He is ff, but was weaned at 3+ months. I suppose the hv must be aware.... Perhaps they are concerned, she hasnt said anything but i dont think she would?

stitch · 01/05/2008 10:40

my family have had babies that were too heavy to lift. everyone thought it was normal.
they do tend to lose the weight though once they are walking.

shrooms · 01/05/2008 10:44

That is very heavy, and 3 months is quite early to wean, as well. But as stitch said, it may even out some when he starts moving around more in a few months.

The thing is although we are mates we have kinda backed off from each other - used to work together. I hope the HV is aware of the situation but I cant say anything really, very awkward.
