Hi everyone,
my 11 month old DS has been under the weather for a couple of weeks now. He has been miserable and not sleeping and screaming. He has had diarrhoea for about three weeks (on and off but more on than off...). I put it down to teething (he has 8 front teeth and I think the back ones are starting to come through). I took him to the doctor last week as he developed quite a hacking cough and his chest sounded rattly. I wanted to make sure he didn't have an infection of some sort. The doctor said he looks fine but that he probably had a little virus. It's now a week on and he did seem to get better - he is sleeping again now - but he has now started vomiting and his poos smell really weird, like acidic sherbert. Quite sweet and vile. He has been off his food for quite a while but this isn't too serious as he is a solid, strong little boy and he isn't in any danger of wasting away I know this is long and there are many symptoms but any advice would be really appreciated. I have no idea what I am doing here!
Thanks

Three weeks is a long time for him to have diarrhoea. I would take him back to the GP. He will probably need to take a sample of poo incase it's a bug. I think he'll need to go back to the GP with the rattly cough aswell. Alot can change in a week, especially in babies.
If he's got vomiting and diarhhoea you need to look out for signs of dehydration. In a baby under 1 you should phone the doctor if:
They are abnormally drowsy or irritable
They have been refusing feeds for 6 hours or more
Vomiting for more then 6 hours
Sunken eyes
passing small amounts of urine.
You really should give NHS Direct a call if you are concerned.

Thanks avenanap. I think you are right, I should take him back to the doctor. I feel like I am there all the time!

Aquasea - avenanap's advice is spot on. Don't worry about how often you go to the docs. Since my ds turned a year old i was there practically every week and he had never been ill til then (apart from at 4wks). Badger them, hound them and be a neurotic mum - sometimes its the only way to get them to take things further. You would much rather be a pain in the rear than realise they have missed something first/second/third time round. Don't want to worry you but it can happen.

Good luck and i hope your wee one feels better soon. And bless lo on teething back teeth if that is the case too - think its really sore for a lot of them.

OK so I went to the doctor and he took some of the poo from his nappy but said that it would be contaminated and that we have to try to get a "fresh" sample... We have to leave his nappy off and try to catch some as it comes out that sounds like fun! Chest, ears everything clear but the doctor agreed that his diarrhoea has been going on too long. I am also going to try him on another formula as perhaps the one he is on isn't agreeing with him. Anyway, thanks for your advice - I wouldn't have gone to the doctors as I felt like I was being a bit stupid but you are right, lillee, I would rather feel stupid than miss something important.

What a nice job for you!
Just remember to keep the fluids going, little bits often, especially if he's vomiting. Keep an eye out for dehydration, the dry nappies are a give away but can be hard to tell if he's got diarrhoea. You're not being silly, that's what they are paid for, it's their job. If they minded they wouldn't be doctors. I hope it passes and he's feeling better. It might be an idea for you to go to the chemist and get some rehydration solution, when people vomit and have diarrhoea it messes about with their electrolytes, this should help to fix that and make him feel better. I don't know if they recommend it over the counter for 11 month olds so you'll have to ask them.
