Help! 18mo DS has persistent rash around mouth

Note: Photo attached, it looks better in the photo than it does in real life… sometimes gets red and angry and weepy, sometimes it’s dry flaky and scaly.

18mo DS has had a persistent rash for about 2-3 months around his mouth. Creams from the doctor (steroidal & anti fungal) have made little to no difference. Slathering it in Vaseline also has made little to no difference. If anything it seems to be getting worse.

DS has eczema on his body which there seems to be more of as weeks go on however it does respond somewhat to the creams from the doctor.

DS’s nursery seem concerned and suggested a food intolerance/allergy issue. They suspected tomatoes so we cut that out but both agree it’s made no difference so likely not correct. Next we are trying cutting out raw cows milk.

DS uses a dummy for sleeping which we regularly clean and sterilize and replace every 3 months.

The rash doesn’t seem to bother DS but definitely bothers us and nursery.

We will of course return to the doctor but in the meantime can anyone suggest anything? I’m at the end of my tether and just want to see my baby’s skin heal.

My son went through something very similar last December and it lasted 9 months!! Until we finally saw a dermatologist who gave us timodine cream which cleared it up like magic! It's been completely clear now for months. It's so distressing to see your child like that and painful for them too. The dermatologist told us it was perioral dermatitis and told us to stop him having his dummy too but that didn't help. We tried loads of different creams too that did nothing and the dr misdiagnosed him 3 times and we had impetigo medication, antibiotics and creams which didn't help at all. Hope you get it sorted x

My little one had similar and was a cows milk allergy, resolved when we stopped it!

Have you tried lanolin, (the stuff you use when you're first breastfeeding)? My daughter had a terrible dribble rash and had really sensitive skin. Any vaseline or moisturiser or other creams just made things worse. This was very gentle and just provided a barrier, which let the skin heal underneath. But you're right, definitely see the doctor again if nothing is working.

My grandson had this and it was cleared up by protecting the skin with vaselin. He had a habit of licking the bottom of his lip.

We actually have some Timodine in the house from a previous nappy rash episode so gave it a go and have seen a significant improvement within 24hrs! Hoping this is finally going to clear it up. Thank you so much! 😊
