Walking Pneumonia

We’re on holiday in Florida and have both been ill since Monday. I have a cold and the cough from hell, tickly but coughing until I’m sick. The doctor came out to DH yesterday and he has walking pneumonia, we just thought he had a cold and stomach bug. He’s got antibiotics, an inhaler, Imodium and anti sickness tablets. How long before we can expect to see an improvement?

We’re due to fly home a week on Sunday and I just want to get home. The doctor was sure he’d be fine to fly home and I just want this holiday to be over

If you think he can stomach it, and can get a taxi to a supermarket, try clear apple juice in small doses. Not quite the same but
my young child is immune suppressed and very prone to being hospitalised with chest infections for IV antibiotics and oxygen. If she can't tolerate food or feels too unwell to want to eat, they go for apple juice as fluid of choice in hospital as it at least gets some calories in and fluid. And it can be diluted with water when he is starting to manage food. Bananas might be suitably blanks? Or apple sauce pots? You can worry about healthy food when he can stomach it. If he's ok with dairy try that. If not how about microwave rice pouches boiled in the kettle? Plain dry crackers to nibble? Or instant porridge with boiled water and honey? Dairy if often difficult to tolerate with pneumonia. Good luck.

Just to clarify, I didn’t mean normal popsicles, I meant rehydration popsicles from a pharmacy! Pedialyte is a popular brand aimed at children or they’ll have a store brand. They work just as well for adults.

A friend of mine (also in the South of the US) has this at the moment. She's been off work for a while and was properly ill for about a week before seeing a doctor (oh to be young and reckless!), but after 3-4 days on the antibiotics she has turned a corner and says she's feeling much better.

Very much hoping it will be the same for your DH!

Do you have any rehydration fluids, @PinkSparklyPussyCat ? If you can get to a pharmacy, they’ll have them.

if he finds it difficult to keep anything down, you can get frozen popsicles to suck on -they’ll still replace the electrolytes. What a nasty experience for you both. 💐

The doctor told us to try diluted Powerade or Gatorade so I managed to get him some of that. He’s just had some plain pasta, not much but more than he’s had for ages. I think the thought of being stuck out here for any longer than necessary is inspiring him to eat!

@PinkSparklyPussyCat how is he feeling today? I really hope he's improving?

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 17/12/2024 00:54

He seems to be a bit brighter today thankfully. He's still very weak but is eating more which will help - we've ordered dinner from Uber Eats as the hotel 'restaurant' even managed to mess up pasta in marinara sauce and make it barely edible! We're both still coughing a lot and I feel really sorry for our neighbours as we must be disturbing them but it can't be helped.

Thank you to everyone who offered help and advice, I really appreciate it. We are both still coughing a lot but DH has been declared fit to fly so we are heading home on Sunday and I can't wait!

Chest x ray ??

despairnow · 21/12/2024 05:32

Sorry see no cxr
I think if concerned get another medical rv before flight home

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 21/12/2024 14:53

Why would we need to do that?

The doctor was happy for him to fly so we're going along with that. Coughs can linger for ages so we're not too worried and we just want to get home.

Thank goodness, @PinkSparklyPussyCat , wishing you safe travels and a speedy recovery. You’ll be so happy to be back home!

Mmr224 · 21/12/2024 22:26

Travel safe.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 23/12/2024 20:07

We're home! We're absolutely shattered but somehow we made it. I didn't think we were going to as DH had a panic attack before we left the hotel but he was so determined to get home.

Thank you to everyone who gave me advice and a handhold, I needed it!

So glad to see you are both safely home! Wishing you a peaceful and restorative Christmas (you won't remember me but you were very kind on another thread on the Litter Tray)x

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 24/12/2024 17:16

Thank you both. Lovely to see Penelope @Toddlerteaplease, her little face cheered me up.

Of course I remember you and the gorgeous Elton @Puppylucky. How is he doing?

He's doing very well thank you @PinkSparklyPussyCat ! Compared to this time last year he's a happy little boy and thoroughly enjoying getting dressed up for Christmas (not!) he was unnerved by his pom-poms in this photo 🙄

I’m glad he’s doing well, he’s such a lovely boy. I’d have been worried if I was on the receiving end of that look though!
