Ear whooshing

Mummabear10032021 · 12/12/2024 23:32

Has anyone experienced whooshing sound in their ear? Have it on and off for 6 months now. I have tinnitus for the last 8 years which I don't even notice anymore. I've heard of pulsatile tinnitus too and that's what it sounds like I have ? Whooshing in sync with my pulse. I'm really stressed over it now . Anyone have this but really quietly and have learned to lice with it ?

I get this every so often, it normally lasts a few days then goes away again. It's annoying but has got less so the more it happens, I just think "Ah not bloody this again!"

XmasSocks · 12/12/2024 23:37

You should go to the GP

My ‘Whoosing’ was a cause for a fairly urgent referral

Flump9 · 12/12/2024 23:38

Yes I had it and it was high blood pressure, went away with bp meds. Get checked out.

Chocolaterocketcake · 12/12/2024 23:39

I get this all the time, as I child I remember lying in bed being convinced I could hear footsteps coming up the stairs, I’d sit up and the sound would disappear, lay down and I could hear the ‘footsteps’ again.

I’ve had normal tinnitus for as long as I can remember too, just one of those things that crops up occasionally -
as with everything, I notice it’s worse with stress, and hormones affect it too. Always had it intensify when pregnant and definitely notice an increase when I’m on my period.

mrsfollowill · 12/12/2024 23:40

Have you had your ears checked for wax lately. I've had this and it turned out my ears were blocked - I could still hear Ok I thought but after using Otex drops - well sporner's corner would have loved to see the results Grin So much old impacted wax came out.

BIL had tinnitus - once he did the same it magically went. It's a bit gross but it was so worth it. I've heard some places can hoover your ears out safely - worth a try?

Schoolrunmum81 · 12/12/2024 23:54

I have pulsatile tinnitus. First visit to GP ended in referral to ent and an MRI to rule out an acoustic neuroma. Mometasone nasal spray got rid of it but it's recently returned so back on the spray. My eardrum is bulging so likely a eustachian tube issue. Could also be brought on by anxiety and high BP. Book a GP appointment x

OfMiceandWomen · 12/12/2024 23:55

I suffered from this every night. After I was put on medication for Blood Pressure and heart problems it stopped so I presumed it was linked that.

Mummabear10032021 · 15/12/2024 23:25

@Schoolrunmum81 thanks for the reply. I definitely have a problem with my eustacian tube. I've always had problems with my ears. They will randomly block even when I don't have a head cold or sinus problems. Especially my left ear where I'm getting the whooshing . I'll go to my gp for spray. It's great to hear that yours went away

@OfMiceandWomen thank you for your reply. It's great that it went for you. I've heard it can definitely be linked to high blood pressure although I doubt that in my case as I actually have very low blood pressure and always have done. Worth getting checked out though

@mrsfollowill I was told a few months back I had some wax in my ears but I never got it done. I had it done years ago and it petrified me cause my ears stayed blocked for so long after it 🙈 maybe that's what I need

@Chocolaterocketcake thank you for replying to me. Yes it's very strange I definitely get it worse when lying down too. I have it intermittently for the past 6 months . Definitely more when I'm stressed. I'll have to keep an eye on for when I'm on my period and does it come on? I had it last week while on my period but that may have been coincidental. It's gone now again but everytime I think it's gone it comes back again a few weeks later

@Whiskeyandkittens thank you for replying. Yes mine comes and goes also. I have regular tinnitus for years and it honestly doesn't bother me. I remember the early days of being so panicked and stressed over the thought of it never going away. I feel I'm slipping back into that now with this pulsatile tinnitus whooshing. I hope I can have the same approach you have towards it some day. The less it scares me, the less it will bother me

I remember having a eustachian tube infection that antibiotics wouldn’t treat when I was a student. It was honestly awful. I thought I was on the high sea while lying in bed, kept crashing into doors and got mistaken for being drunk twice. Felt so nauseous too. Ear problems are no laughing matter.

I get it all the time, especially late in the evening when I am tired or watching TV. I also have low blood pressure. It used to drive me mad until I read somewhere that you can ease it by doing slow deep breathing. It really works. If I get it now, I just take a few deep breaths like you do at the start of a relaxation exercise, and it goes away. Comes back again, but the slow breaths control it. Worth a try.

I've had it for ages and never thought to have it checked out - is it really that serious?

BellissimoGecko · 15/12/2024 23:37

Sounds like high blood pressure. Go to your gp and get it checked out.

CoolPlayer · 16/12/2024 00:02

I had this and my ear was fully blocked (gross I know) go to the gp x

EllieRosesMammy · 16/12/2024 00:02

Ask for a refferal to ENT. I've also had tinnitus for as long as I can remember now. Also felt like my ears were always blocked. Doctors told me for years they were fine. Refferal to ENT immediately told me I have massive adenoids that block my sinus' and I've also got a concave in my ear drum, from them previously bursting, that is probably causing the tinnitus. I was so relieved to get an actual answer rather than just fobbed off all the time x

Chewbecca · 16/12/2024 10:55

I self diagnosed (I know, I know!) my whooshing as eustachian tube dysfunction and used beconase which totally resolved it after a few days. Might be worth a go.

Mummabear10032021 · 16/12/2024 21:17

@Chewbecca that's so interesting. The ear I get the whooshing in I've always said there's a problem with the eustacian tube. Even when I'm on a plane the pressure just builds and builds in my left ear and I can't relieve it so it gets so painful ! Even when I blow holding my nose, only my right ear will pop. I remember mentioning it to a gp years ago and she mentioned a collapsed eustacian tube. I'll definitely go about getting this checked out

You have wax build up that needs removing. It will get rid of that. I have tinnitus and suffered the same and that's what it was.

tanqueray10 · 16/12/2024 21:28

I had this when I was anaemic. Definitely worth getting it checked out . X

Happydaisydoo · 17/12/2024 11:18

I have this and saw an ENT yesterday and have a brain scan next week as no wax and and no pressure behind ear and heating test was fine. They are now looking for a globus tumour or an acoustic neuroma. If the scan is normal I will be seeing a neuro to see if it is a squashed or blocked vein somewhere.

Mummabear10032021 · 17/12/2024 14:33

@Happydaisydoo thanks for the reply. I have been to the gp today he said my ear looks red so gave me antibiotics drops. We'll see how they go I can't imagine a little infection would cause my ear to be whooshing so loud. Did you have any redness in the ear or anything ?

No redness no so sounds like you may have an infection which is good news as gives an explanation:)

Sunnnybunny72 · 17/12/2024 20:16

I've had it two and a half years. Constantly in my left ear. It comes and goes and goes in my right. MRI was clear. I've had two. It's there right now, I can count my heart rate at any given time. BP is fine. I'm not anaemic.
No idea what the cause is and no one seems bothered now.
