Flu admissions surge by 70 percent

thumpe100 · 12/12/2024 13:17

I would advise anyone who hasn't had a jab, PLEASE do so.

I got my jab back in October, as they give it out free as I work in education.

Last weekend after attending a flurry of kids birthday parties, and events I came down with flu. Friday I came home from work and felt wiped out, Sat it started.

All the classic flu symptoms, aches, runny nose and cough, headaches, I called my GP and got a telephone consulation, she explained the vaccine should mean I have a milder version if its flu.

Today is the first day I feel like getting out bed, that I can even read or watch TV, the last 5 days have been a blur, partner has it now and flat out ( no vaccine).

Just to warn people, the strain around at the moment is HORRIBLE, I wouldn't wish it on anyone, and I was vaccinated.

If you're under 65 , or you don't have any underlined health conditions it still horrificly bad, if what I've experienced this week is the " mild version " , due to being jabbed !!!

'Tidal wave' of flu hits hospitals in England as admissions surge by 70 per cent

A "tidal wave" of flu infections has led to a 70% increase in hospital cases in England in just seven days.

My dd has been super poorly this week. She's 5 and had some illnesses in her time including numerous bouts of tonsillitis, scarlett fever and pneumonia. I have never seen her as ill as I did this week. Luckily or not so luckily she has ended up with a chest infection and antibiotics which as turned it around quickly but it was awful seeing her how she was on Tuesday. She did have the flu spray sometime in the autumn.

What12345 · 12/12/2024 13:33

I agree with this, both myself and daughter very unwell this week. I have waves of feeling ok and then waves of feeling very unwell

Get your vaccines when they are available.

DecayingRelic · 12/12/2024 13:40

nah thanks

last year I had the covid and flu jab on the same day and felt very odd and spaced out and not with it for about a month afterwards

decided not to have any this time

PanicAttax · 12/12/2024 13:43

I also had the jab and feel I'm coming down with a mild version, nose running and intense headaches plus mild nausea. I'm so glad not to have the full on version though.

bakewellbride · 12/12/2024 13:43

I thought you were only meant to have it if you were vulnerable e.g pregnant? I don't have it but am happy to be educated op.

I had the flu vaccine when I was pregnant and my kids have of course had it so no need to touch on that.

SpongeBobSquarePantaloons · 12/12/2024 13:46

I'm 29 and I've been ill for four weeks now. Think I've had every symptom you can have under the flu umbrella. It's definitely one of the worst viruses I've had in my life.

QwestSprout · 12/12/2024 13:48

Doesn't help when our NHS trust (Scotland) isn't giving the flu jags out until this month, and even when you're on the vulnerable list your date is the 23rd December! We've already both had/have flu.

saveforthat · 12/12/2024 13:51

I had the flu jab in October and I have the flu now. I haven't had a dose of flu for many years. Glad I had the jab as it could have been much worse.

They aren't available.

Glad she's on the mend, it must just be a very nasty strain.

Nothing scares me more when my DC are ill, I kept my 6 year old off school this week, as partner WFH, and I'm not going anywhere.

Its weird , apart from being a bit pale on Monday and a bit of a cough, nothing. She's itching to go back to school, I've told the school we all have flu, I feel well enough now to know I'll be ok to take her back on Monday.

I'm nearly 60 and I've never had a flu jab, very rarely get flu either.
Same story with covid, I didn't get the jab and I didn't get covid.
I guess I'm just resistant 🤷🏻‍♀️

404ErrorCode · 12/12/2024 14:00

Obviously, nothing is 100% effective, but everyone I know who had the flu got the vaccine.

My son can’t have it, due to it causing him to end up hospitalised with kidney issues, so we are having to ensure his immune system is as good as it can be.

They've given out free for years where I work.

I think if you work in schools, Uni's, NHS obviously, they give it out free. I guess those workers have a good position to be super spreaders.

If you care for someone vulnerable , or live with anyone who gets free flu jab, you can get one.

I know some private firms do, my friend gets free jab from her corporate job.

If you're not vulnerable (over 65, health issues, etc) you can just pay for one at any chemist, where I live I think its under 20 quid. The chemist will check for you.

I've seen some replies its hard to get one at the moment, sorry to hear that especially @QwestSprout , late December is WAY too late!!

I’m genuinely asking this question out of curiosity as it always escapes me. Why would you call your GP for the flu? They can’t do anything about it and unless you have a bacterial infection then antibiotics won’t do anything.

IncessantNameChanger · 12/12/2024 14:07

I get it free as we have a disabled child. Couldn't face it for the last two years. Dh has it so can care for ds wife I get flu. All the kids got the nasal spray even my 17 year old. I can't stand the dead arm for days. But I know I should

They can. If necessary and you are part of an at-risk population, you can be prescribed Oseltamivir or Zanamivir which will reduce the duration and severity of influenza symptoms.

Sheer igronance.

I thought as I heaved brown muck from lungs and felt like I was going to die, fever, every inch of my body aching , how can I feel this bad when I have the jab? It must be something else. I specifically asked for a telephone consulation.

Where I live its pretty easy to get same day telephone call backs and my partner was really worried , as was I, the fever was so bad.

I had no idea you can still get wiped out by flu with a vaccine.

So in answer , I called the GP because I was sacred (and stupid).

If you feel you're getting worse progressively, you should always call your GP, I've had flu before, but this was so aggressive. I honestly thought I was going to die on Monday night.

No thanks. The only people I know who ever get ill with flu are the people who have HAD the flu jab. Make it make sense?!?!?!?! I've had covid 3 times, nothing worse than a bad hangover.
The old cold. 1 high temp . Clearly my immune system is doing something right so why would I mess it up with covid/flu jabs?! I genuinely believe they do more harm than good.
(No not anti vax my kids have had all theirs and I have the whooping cough one when pregnant)

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 12/12/2024 14:14

That’s luck rather than science and a huge risk to take

I am eligible for a free vaccine due to a chronic illness and got it within days of it being rolled out. Pretty sure the virus I had about a month ago, complete with fevers, shakes, loss of appetite, couldn't get out of bed other to help my ds who was slammed by the same thing, was the flu. It was awful to be that ill but it's taken to this week to be fully up and running again and not just dragging my weary ass around.

I know that the vaccine wasn't well suited to the southern hemisphere winter and they had high hospital admissions as a result too.

my partner NEVER has flu jab as they are in good health, has had flu before and says this is the worse EVER., so we can all use a anecdotal.

Don't get it, its up to you, I'm not taking part in any anti-vax, pro vax whatever)

my post is simply a warning that this year bug is EVIL, that's all

I hope my post didn't upset you, or come across as preaching, honestly I feel like I had a near death experience ( I have an extreme low pain threshold) so had to sound off on MN when I saw all these headlines about a flu surge (as I'm living it!)

Because a large cohort of people who get the flu jab are either in a severe outcome category or a high exposure category.

I'll respectfully agree to disagree, we're all entitled to our opinion. I've never had the flu jab and never will. It doesn't work and it's pointless at best, harmful at worst.

Iheartmysmart · 12/12/2024 14:21

I remember a couple of years ago when the flu jab and the Covid booster was available to the over 50’s for the last time, many of my friends had them. Pretty much without exception they were absolutely floored with a horrible bug that year. Whilst those who chose not to, got through the winter more or less unscathed.

Even my 80 year old mum refuses the flu jab after seeing how poorly it made my dad whenever he had it.
