Sudden dizziness

Last week I was lying in bed, watching TV when I siddenly experienced what was 10 seconds of dizziness. It felt like the floor was moving up and down. I got out of bed in a panic, walked around and checked in the mirror for signs of a stroke, lifting up arms, looking at my face etc. All seemed normal, but I did feel spaced out. Not long after that my 2 year old vomited (he had a bug), and when bending over to help him, I experienced the brief dizziness again (floor moving up and down) but it passed again.
I saw the Gp a few days after this, worried it was a stroke. He didn't seem concerned but as he knows I have severe HA, he referred me for an MRI which I'm now waiting on.

Does this sound like a stroke?
Also, I was wondering if this could be vertigo,? Although i think vertigo causes a spinning sensation and my dizziness felt like the floor was moving under me.
Please talk me down from thinking I had a stroke while I wait for my MRI! I'm 40, no health issues and normal weight/BP.

Dizziness is quite common and rarely caused by something serious. Have you had an ear infection recently or any problems with your ears?
Anxiety can also cause dizziness.

defnotadomesticgoddess · 10/12/2024 22:41

There are lots of things that can cause this most of which aren’t too serious. I had something like this for 8 years on and off turned out it was vestibular migraines. Now I take medication and look after myself and am fine. I had an mri and balance tests to rule out lots of other things. Good luck 💐

Els1983 · 10/12/2024 23:07

@AnxiousRose I usually get blocked ears due to impacted wax and have had my ears syringed numerous times due to this, but don't recall this problem on the day the dizziness happened.

@defnotadomesticgoddess I had heard of these sorts of migranes but I didn't have any sort of headache during the episodes and I don't have a history of migranes.

The other thing that worried me is that the day after this, I had a very subtle strange sensation on one side of my face that lasted 20 minutes. I wouldn't say it felt numb, just odd. All looked fine in the mirror. I started to feel panicky about this, so left the house for a walk and as soon as I did, the sensation disappeared and never came back. This also led me to worry about it being a TIA.

Could this also be due to vestibular migranes? Or something less serious than a TIA?

Surprisingly enough dehydration can cause the same sensation. Had you been drinking enough fluids?

EDIT - my GP has diagnosed vertigo when I had the same dizziness. It felt like I was on a boat rocking on the sea (motion sickness). Think I was given a short dose of antibiotics but can't swear to it. Anyway it went after a week.

Els1983 · 11/12/2024 07:53

@LittleGreenDragons yes I would say it felt like rocking on a boat, but I was very well hydrated.

This was odd as it was sudden dizziness which then stopped, and then the strange face sensation the next day, which then also stopped..

Weirdly you can have a vestibular migraine without the headache. I have a history of migraines and motion sickness and all of my tests came back clear so I’m now on medication which prevents them, I was diagnosed by an ent consultant. I think once you’ve had the mri results you’ll hopefully be able to rule out more serious causes 💐

Have you had a virus recently? It can be a post -viral thing and will go away on its own.

MrsLeonFarrell · 11/12/2024 08:27

Might be worth looking up the symptoms of temporal mandibular joint syndrome to see if they resonate.

Els1983 · 11/12/2024 10:54

Thanks All. I don't think I had a virus, although my youngest clearly did as they were being sick that day.

I went to the doctors with dizziness. She suggested I might be anxious as I had an MRI coming up booked for something else. There was a minor issue with my ear (not why I was having a head MRI) but since I've had benign paroxysmal positional vertigo almost every winter.

OhBling · 11/12/2024 11:46

I have experiened dizzyness as a result of sinus infections. Also due to bp which can drop very suddenly and for some reason with me, happens a lot when I have sinus infectinos (and seems to be true for DS too based on recent illness) - bending over, for example. so one bp test at the docto risn't going to give you a good BP answer. I once had a doctor spend a good few minutes taking my BP repeatedly because he found it quite entertaining how it shifted massively as I stood up (also turned out I had a raging sinus infectino but bizarrely, no cold, no pain, and no stuffiness).

BigDahliaFan · 11/12/2024 11:50

Virus, perimenopause, vertigo, all things that can cause dizziness.

DecayingRelic · 11/12/2024 12:41

Bloody hell, how do you get an MRI just like that?

I have had severe vertigo, dizziness for the past 6 weeks, I can hardly get out of bed. I also have hearing loss and one sided tinnitus, a referral to ENT was sent but they are reviewing whether I can even have an appointment😬

Barleycat · 11/12/2024 20:06

I had a vestibular migraine for the first time on Sunday. First symptom was vertigo. Was v scary and i ended up going to a and e. I felt very spaced out during and afterwards for a couple of days. Could be something like that?

Barleycat · 11/12/2024 20:08

My vestibular migraine also caused numbness by my lip and this can also be a symptom.

Els1983 · 11/12/2024 20:19

@Barleycat that definitely sounds closer to what I had. Did you have a headache at all? I didn't which is what worried me and I don't have a history of migranes (although my Dad was diagnosed with migranes in his 50s, not sure if it's hereditary).

No headache when it started but it came on several hours later. You don't always get a headache with vestibular migraines I believe. Check out symptoms on line, apparently they can last minutes or days.
