Fell over and scraped both my knees over the weekend. I rinsed wounds, applied Savlon antiseptic, put random plasters on (pictured). Should I just leave everything as is, or try and take the plasters off and try new products? If so, what should I buy?

I didn’t have plasters big enough to cover everything. Some of the cut is exposed to the air. Some covered by the plaster’s adhesive. Tried to join 2 plasters on my left knee, one of those is a faster healing (moist) plaster and the other is a normal one which is now falling off whilst the other stays put…

I can see through the moist plasters and it looks like a mess - like the wounds are weeping. So thinking I might need to start afresh unless this is fine?

You probably need a breathable dressing or to expose them to air.

NotbloodyGivingupYet · 10/12/2024 19:50

You need to start again. You should be able to buy a couple of big plasters, but you have to be sure that the actual dressing is big enough. Or you can buy some dressings and some micropore to stick them on with

Wounds heal quicker in air because they are dry. Dry means they scab over better.

But you do have to the added complication that Knees can't be protected so much because bending them often dislodges any scab as the skin stretches.

If you have washed the wounds I'd leave them open and sit with your legs straight out in front and allow them air and air them overnight.

Cover during the day if needs be. Remove dressings as soon as you can at home again.

If moisture is forming under the plaster it allows a warm damp environment which is ideal for any germs to multiply and breed.

Agree with the above.
Clean and dry area and leave exposed for as long as possible.
Buy dressings from pharmacy/chemist type shop that let the wounds breathe and remove as soon as able.

Justcallmebebes · 10/12/2024 19:56

I agree. Let the air at them

Thanks everyone. See I thought the moist plasters were supposed to be good for healing/preventing scars, or are they no good? I also have Savlon advanced healing gel which again is designed to keep wounds moist - should I leave that as well? (Haven’t used it so far)

@itsgettingweird ahhh that’s another thing, I’m a side sleeper and tend to start off sleeping straight but roll over during the night which probably hasn’t helped

Would something like this do? I have tape to secure it at home. www.boots.com/boots-sterile-gauze-swabs-75cm-x-75cm-5-pack-10320370
