Toddler blood in poo (maybe IBD)

I have already spoken to a dr

My toddler (nearly 3years old ) has been having loose poo for over a month and now diarrhoea with blood and mucus in for about 10 days.

The Gp has done an urgent referral to paediatrics for this week because his fecal calproteectin (inflammation test) was really high.

I get ulcerative colitis and I am so worried he has this too but mine was diagnosed in my 20's

Has anyone else been through this? What happened? Any toddlers with blood in poo for over a week that turned out to just be a bad infection?

He's fine otherwise, no temperature just a bit off his food. Waking up a lots at night but often because he has pooed.

Thank you from an extremely stressed and worried mum x

I've not been through this, but bumping.

It has certainly been my fear for my children since I was diagnosed with UC in my late 20's. My 3 children have made it to teens+ with no sign of IBD. I hope this is something that passes for your little one.

Thank you! I feel incredibly guilty that this might be something I have 'passed on' even though I know I can't think like that.

The dr said IBD rarely presents in children so young but sounded less certain about this after the test results.

Hopefully it won't be something serious

It meant a lot to me that you replied in December, I just want to update this and say it is IBD, and starting treatment soon. Apparently it's becoming more common in much younger child. I hope none of your children ever develop symptom, and really thank you so much for your response this process was excruciating so far and it helped feel less on my own with it x

@informationunderload hi if you haven't already found it there is an amazing Facebook page called Uk parents of kids with IBD.

My DD was diagnosed age 12 ( she's now 16) and that page has been a massive support over the years.

I hope the treatment works well - it took us a year and a half to get it right but she has been free of any flare ups for almost three years now after she was put on infliximab infusions.

What a blow, that is so unexpected at that tender age! At least you have a diagnosis and hopefully the treatment will kick in soon. Wishing you well. The FB page looks like it will be helpful and supportive.

Thank you both for recommending the Facebook page, I might need to make a Facebook account just for this. I haven't used for years.

Medicine is already starting to work a bit, I know it often takes a while to get it really right and it's a long way to go still but I'm starting to feel like it will be ok now he's being treated.

Feel free to ask here if you have any questions about treatments. DD has had a few different meds over the years and having seen her consultant at GOSH yesterday it looks like she will be changing again. Eventually there should be an actual cure - within 5 years apparently if trials go well.
