Green gunk in DDs eye - conjunctivitis?

It is a little red, not too badly. She is getting a build up of green gunk, and when I cleaned it before bed, its across her actual eye ball.

I am trying to stop her rubbing, but she is only 22 months .

Could it be conjuntivitis? Can I medicate from pharmacy or will this be a trip to the Drs?

Could be, cooled boiled water for now or breast milk if you are b/f?
Then if still bad tomorrow doctors x

Sounds like it - there are some eye drops dr recommended to me - you can get them over the counter but only if you say your dd is over 2.

I got some from the dr's only good for 28 days if kept in fridge, he got it again a week later, friday night couldnt open eye - went and asked the pharmasist she wouldnt give them to me - suggested either keeping his hands away from his eyes (he's 1 ffs) or a trip to A&E - witch!!!

Sorry though, I cant remeber the name of them

Magnolia - have been bumping your thread !

My DS has recently had conjunctivitis and I found out there are 2 types - bacterial (which apparently makes the eye red) and viral which is what my DS had, which meant streams of gunk which started in one eye, then spread to the other and was coming out both nostrils as well! The eye itself wasn't red though. I spoke to the doc and described the symptoms and avoided a trip in. They didn't give me medication as it was the viral version but apparently they prescribe drops/antibiotics for bacterial. Probably best to give your doc a call or take them in. Hope this helps and hope it gets better!

my ds has is just recovering from it. cooled boiled water with added salt to bathe the eye every few hours. The drops we have are chloramphenicol from the drs.

geordie A&E!!! its not that bad. She can open and shut her eye, when she went to bed at least. But its coating a lot of her eye. She seems fine with it tho. Apart from also green snot coming out of her nose. Poor thing, she looks less attractive than normal!!!
I get the impression this is standard for babies this age, permamently green faces!!!

BTW what causes it?

If its a snotty nose sounds the same as what we had. We were advised just to let it run its course which took about 5 days I think. Quite frightening for him though when he woke and couldn't open his eyes. I think its just like a cold bug thats passed around (viral anyway). Someone more knowledgeable than me can probably help more. You need a doctor to join the thread!

my dd has had it a few times - usually when it's a bit windy. You can buy Brolene drops over the counter as long as you say she is over 2 and they usually clear it up in a couple of days.

Pavlovthecat · 29/04/2008 22:56

Thanks Millie I will pop in tomorrow and see if I can get some. DD is a slight girl, so I might go in without her!

I have understood this to be a relatively common problem with little ones, DD has just not had it yet!

I am guessing we should try to clean her puds a bit more whilst she had this..think I should use antibac hand gel on her for a few days?

that's what we do. The drops work really quickly but the trick is to keep putting them in for a couple of days after its cleared up. My DD is tiny too - she is 23 months but was 3 months prey - so I never take her either!

geordieminx · 30/04/2008 08:10

No, Pavloov - ds's wasnt that bad either the pharmasist was just being a jobs worth - obviously didnt have kids of her own

goingfor3 · 30/04/2008 08:29

You can get a free prescription from the pharmacists rather than paying for over the counter. Most pharmacists where I live offer the service.

Pavlovthecat · 30/04/2008 12:15

goingfor3 - really? wow I did not know that, I will ask.

It seems ok at the moment, a little crusty, but hardly noticeable. Redness reduced.

She had a cold, and to be honest, her nose is greener right now! I will keep an eye on it (excuse the pun!!) and am keeping it and her (and my) hands clean.
