Piles help

I have very painful piles (external)
No idea where they have come from as not suffered since I was pregnant last 6 years ago.

Anyway they are agony and nothing is helping. I've tried Anusol, Germaloids (off the shelf) pain killers, and topical ibuprofen gel.
Not getting any pain relief and no reduction in size. Had them since last Friday.

Please help, what else can I try? Or is it doctor visit territory?

Are they thrombosed? I’ve had that and the only thing that really worked was a cold gel ice pack wrapped in a tea towel. Sheriproct cream (I think) was also prescribed by the GP. I would suggest it’s time for a GP visit - it sounds very painful.

Eminybob · 02/12/2024 19:48

How would I know if its thrombosed?

I think when it is painful to sit, to pass bowel movements and if you bleed when you go to the toilet. There can be changes in colour to, depending on your skin tone.

In the end lots of Anusol and Germaloids applied at every opportunity. I also had witch hazel gel which I kept in the fridge.
It was a hideous couple of weeks but sorted itself out and I haven’t had it again since.

Oh brilliant I’m in the thick of it laid up can’t even stand. Dr has just prescribed me the anusol suppositories, cream, numbing cream and laxido. I’m praying this works

I'm just going to drop in here what happened to me during my last pregnancy. I had piles and was given a prescription for Anusol (because prescriptions were free, being pregnant). I used it continuously, things got worse. Was prescribed Germaloids plus suppositories. The piles continued and the pain was so bad that I couldn't walk or sleep (the piles were HUGE).

Eventually, and in tears, I went back to the doctor who wondered if I might have an allergy to one of the ingredients in the common OTC creams (which I was having, although on prescription because of them being free). He prescribed be Anugesic, which is prescription only, and the piles vanished in ten days. From utter agony that I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy, to tiny skin tags.

So this might be the case for you too, it's always worth having a word with your doctor.

Thanks so much. I think I’ll persevere for another day or two and if no improvement I will go back and suggest what you have said. I’m like you were now. I can’t even turn over in bed with out crying out, I don’t dare drink anything because going to the loo is also agony! I’m lucky I have 1. I can not imagine your pain having several They honesty are the worst thing EVER.
First day of Easter hols too 😭

They absolutely are the WORST. It's like having toothache of the bum. I'm a horse rider and even the thought of bouncing on a saddle would bring me to tears when the piles were at their worst.

Wishing you a happy result.

OP Meanwhile do as suggested by a pp and use a gel ice pack (wrapped in thin material ) and hold it against your piles whilst lying down. This should help shrink them. Also propping your legs higher than your head whilst resting might help. If they are very hard to the touch they are most likely tbrombosed and you will need to go back to your your GP for a cream with lidocaine in it. If not the ice may help reduce them so you can push them back inside. They are hell l know!

Squigglesandgiggles · 07/04/2025 19:01

Well I have a gruesome update…. I went to the dr and he said it was a thrombosed haemorrhoid, walking up the stairs I was in such agony I can’t describe. THEN IT BURST!!!!!

it was so painful but my good the relief is next level. So back to drs I went. They have given me antibacterial wipes, gauze and strong antibiotics. Jeepers

Seaoftroubles · 08/04/2025 14:30

OP l thought they must be thrombosed. Agony! But you will be OK now they have burst. If need be get yourself a Sitz bath so you sit in that and soothe the area regularly. Hopefully they will clear up quickly though you might be left with a skin tag. Take it easy and put your feet up when possible.
