Hip arthroscopy advice

DP is due hip surgery later this week, we haven’t been given much time to prepare. I believe it’s hip arthroscopy (he needs the hip bone shaved as well).

We have a 6 month old baby and a dog so I am a bit worried about how I will manage with looking after them and the house while DP is out of action.

What are your top tips for recovery please?

Will DP be able to go up and down stairs as soon as he is home from surgery? Is it unrealistic to think he will be ok to sit in the car for two 30 min journeys on Christmas Day? And for him to be comfortable enough to actually enjoy Christmas Day?

thank you!

I had a hip arthroscopy back in 2018. The recovery was helped by very precise physio instructions from the surgeon which needed to be followed for about 6 weeks. It was day surgery and before I left hospital they made sure I was able to manoeuvre up and down stairs on the crutches. I didn't do any long journeys in the first month or so but I remember being quite comfortable in the car if the seat was pushed right back. The pain killers provided were quite strong which was necessary.
The results of the surgery were amazing. Now 6 years on I do get the odd twinge but the movement in my hip is great and all the pain and limping I suffered from went very quickly and it was transformative. I hope his surgery goes well.

I've had a couple of hip arthroscopies. Both shaved the bone and one was a labral debridement, the other a repair (repair is usually a bit longer on crutches). Stairs were no problem (they won't let you out of hospital if you're not competent on crutches). It was my right leg so I couldn't drive for a couple of weeks but I was fine in the car (probably more than 30 mins each way to physio every week). I also took my daughter to watch the ballet two days after surgery and I was fine sitting through that. I cooked dinner and looked after the children and the house with minimal changes to what I could do so don't let him con you that he can't do anything for six weeks Smile

I have had labral tears repaired on both hips, one six months after the other. The recovery was very quick. If he tells you it’s not, and he has you running around after him, he’s pulling your leg.

Stairs, fine.
Sitting in car for 30mins should be fine too.
He might be tired and need an afternoon nap. (From GA as well as discomfort, healing and possibly disturbed sleep).

Thank you so much for sharing your experiences! I’m glad to hear that he should be ok in the car. That’s good to know that they’ll make sure he is competent on the crutches before allowing him home.

He looked after me really well following my c section so I’ll look after him too but I’m hopeful he won’t take the p…

Did you need to sleep upright for a period of time?

I didn't sleep upright, I just had to sleep on my back with some pillows under my knee to support it slightly flexed and stop my moving around

No, but flat on my back, hence poor sleep! Rolling over was challenging and gradually, carefully introduced.
