Is my daughter diabetic?

Don’t want to prematurely speak to 111 or GP if no need.

DD15 has a far smaller appetite than usual, is frequently either constipated or has diarrhoea, vomits if she eats a lot of food - have read that this is a symptom of gasteoparesis which can come with diabetes Type 2

Am concerned as she has a very poor diet and will eat family sized bags of sweets/chocolate regularly without my knowledge. She eats fruit about once a week and veg when I serve it to her. We both know that this is a big problem and I do encourage her to improve her diet

She is less active than she used to be, plays hockey once a week but that’s it exercise-wise. She has a healthy BMI - far from overweight.

Must also add that she isn’t unusually tired or thirsty and doesn’t visit the toilet frequently. I know I may be catastrophising but please give me advice as I know her symptoms can’t be because of nothing and am terribly worried. Please advise

You need to take her to the doctor. Nobody here can tell you what's wrong

ClarasSisters · 01/12/2024 20:17

I wouldn't leap to diabetes with that description, sounds potentially more like an eating disorder to me.

Wendolino · 01/12/2024 20:22

Dr. Google strikes again.
Gastroparesis as a complication of diabetes is a complication that comes from having diabetes for a long time.
Her symptoms sound nothing like diabetes but you need to get her to see a doctor.

Anewuser · 01/12/2024 20:25

Sounds more like impaction from constipation, with the diarrhoea being overflow. She needs to see a GP then sort out her diet with more fibre.

As PP says, symptoms doesn’t sound like type 1 diabetes and if she’s not overweight, it’s unlikely she has type 2.

Coconutter24 · 01/12/2024 20:30

Doesn’t sound like it but why wouldn’t you take her to the doctor if there’s a problem it will be far more beneficial than asking on here

Nursemumma92 · 01/12/2024 21:08

Highly unlikely a 15 year old has type 2 diabetes, especially with a healthy BMI. Agree with PP that you need to make an appointment with your GP.

Nogodsnomasters · 01/12/2024 21:13

Nothing here rings diabetes alarm bells so I'm really unsure how you've reached that potential conclusion. As PP says it may be an impaction or I would also consider coeliacs disease for her.

Sounds like disordered eating and possibly an intolerance or eating disorder.
