Son UTI for over a year -help

I do have another thread in chat which tells the whole saga but I'm really after some quick advice from anyone medical please

Son 16 years old
Ecoli infection in urine since August 2023 ( yes over a year!)
8 course of antibiotics ( all sensitive to the infection)
Still infected
One ultrasound 10 months ago which showed debris in bladder but nothing concerning with bladder or kidneys

What would be causing this persistent or reoccurring infection please? Already had a referral to paediatric but they sent him home with more antibiotics back in September and we are back to square one

Help please! Anyone have experience, knowledge of what would cause this and how to resolve? Not getting much help from NHS

No, the guidelines have not been changed and therefore the nhs will not treat him in this fashion.

So a private GP is the only way for long term use?

I wonder why NHS don't prescribe long term, are there risks?

I am not a medical expert so I may be barking up the wrong tree with this one but I have a male friend who told me he had persistent kidney infections as a teen as a result of taking ecstasy. He didn't tell his mum or the doctor at the time. He is in his late thirties now so he realises this was idiotic. I believe some drugs causes urinary retention and this could cause an infection. Sorry if this is completely the wrong end of the stick don't want to cause offence!

cosietea · 07/12/2024 21:03

No offence taken and I'm very confident he's not taking drugs

He's got ecoli and puesdomonas bacteria that Dr is saying is the cause of the infection

The sample pot I used last time was rinsed out with water before he did a wee ( my fault) but GP seems to think that wouldn't make a difference to the lab result

I had a nasty UTI that lasted from March of this year until May.

I had several course of antibiotics and a hospital stay as it had progressed to a kidney infection and finally with this antibiotic ( begins with C) it finally cleared after 7 days.

I felt terrible, the dr believes that u I may of become resistant to some of the antibiotics.

It is unusual for a male to develop UTI's, have you got a referral for a urologist?

Sorry your son is going through this, untreated UTI's are so painful.
The GP should be ensuring that there is no long term damage to the kidneys as well.

Hopefully the complaint to PALS should get things moving in the right direction x

We have another referral for paediatrics but I have asked why we're not being referred to urology and it is noted in my complaint to PALS

The paediatrics appointment isn't until end of March though. Something needs to happen before then though

@santasbaby94 was it Ciprofloxacin?

This is what he's currently taking, although only a 5 day course

@cosietea it was called cephalexin.
I had all the usually antibiotics before it finally cleared up with cephalexin.

I hope your son feels better soon, he has my sympathies, I had this for 2 months I can't imagine having this for a year.

Thanks @santasbaby94

He had already taken cephalexin last month but it didn't work

He had just finished Ciprofloxacin so fingers crossed f

I have the same issue. Went to the Harley Street doctor today after the recommendation on here and they prescribed me an antiseptic and an antibiotic course for 3 months, review will be in March.

My pharmacy is closed today - so will go on Monday to collect the prescription.

They charged £275 for a 30 minute consultation. I gave them a urine sample on entry and they had the results within 5mins.

Update

He has now been referred for a DSMA scan to have an in depth look at kidneys and bladder and check for scar tissue etc and has also been prescribed a prophylactic for longer term use ( trimethropin again)

Follow up with paediatric in January and also a referral to adult urology

He needs to see a urologist- he might give him a through ct scan on his urinary organs or go inside his bladder to check there’s nothing sinister which unlikely for his age- it’s very probable that he’s got a stubborn infection and the dose of AB is too soft and won’t touch it. Consultant might say that may he need a very a strong dose of antibiotics for 2 - 3 weeks then prophylactic AB. And while he’s on prophylactic AB, he will then need regular urine tests to check that he’s not developing resistance to the antibiotics he’s taking. I’d also buy home urine dip stick tests if you haven’t got some already.
