Have you had an iron test? A low mean cell haemaglobin level points to anaemia.

Safa2 · 29/11/2024 20:17

hey I have been very tired lately and it come up on my nhs app I only had it done this morning

suprised it’s done so quick … so it indicates low iron?

Everything is normal except you are anaemic.

Yes. There is an explanation here
https://www.healthline.com/health/mch#low-mch

What Is MCH and What Do High and Low Values Mean?

MCH is the average quantity of hemoglobin present in a single red blood cell. Learn what it means if your MCH value is low or high, plus symptoms and treatment.

Greybeardy · 29/11/2024 20:55

You're not anaemic. The MCH is a bit low and that might suggest iron deficiency (although the MCV is fine), or a few other things. It doesn't look like iron studies/haematinics are on this page of results. As usual though, it's nigh on impossible to comment meaningfully on isolated blood results like this without the context of why they were taken, any trends in results, and any other tests that were done - best person to advise you is the person who requested the test.

pumpkinpillow · 29/11/2024 21:11

If you saw this on your NHS test result app it should say whether further action is needed.
If not then I think the gp will have looked at the 'below reference limit' results in the context of all the other results, previous results, and you as an individual (age, other health conditions) and considered the low result as nothing to worry about.

Safa2 · 29/11/2024 21:34

Says no further action needed

Then you're fine Smile

Samphire44 · 29/11/2024 21:50

If you are tired and have other symptoms of low iron I would ask for an iron panel to check.

coffeesaveslives · 30/11/2024 07:35

If you're worried you can book another appointment - it does mean you could be slightly iron deficient. Did they check your ferritin or B12?

GG1986 · 30/11/2024 11:13

They should have checked your ferritin levels and probably b12 also. My haemoglobin is usually around 122, but my ferritin was 7! And my mean cell levels were usually under also.

Not necessarily!

Yep - I've just been through this myself.

My haematocrit and MCHC were both very, very borderline normal - my nurse recommended folic acid supplements and a follow up in two months - my levels are now well within normal ranges again (and incidentally I feel much more energetic and healthy too).
