First period post baby... TMI warning - help!

MissingMyHeels · 29/04/2008 09:22

My DD is 6+2 weeks old and I think I am having my first period as PP bleeding finished after about 2-3 weeks (em cs).

Prior to baby I always had fairly light periods lasting about 3 days. I have already been on for 4 days and it is the heaviest bleeding I have ever had - heavier than my post partum bleeding even. Also has lots of clots, is this normal? I don't recall having them before.

I am feeling so weak and lacking in energy and nearly passed out when I got out of bed this am and also feeling very shivery. Can't get a GPs appointment until Friday so any advice appreciated!

Gosh you sound in a sorry state. I do not have experience of this but the thought that springs to mind is that you might have a bit of retained placenta. I could be completely wrong about this though.

Anyway, I would not tolerate waiting until Friday. Ring up again and tell them the situation (exagerate if need be!) or try ringing the HV or the midwife or the post natal ward. Someone surely could advise you about this?

nickytwotimes · 29/04/2008 09:25

my first few were very very heavy. They settled over a few months though. If you are feeling that bad though, I'd ask for some advice. Can you speak to GP on phone?

belgo · 29/04/2008 09:27

I also think you should speak to your doctor, or maybe even your midwife if you can't get hold of the doctor.

I think this warrents an emergenctrip to the GP - emergency as in today, not having to wait until friday.

MissingMyHeels · 29/04/2008 09:32

Thank you. A call to the post-natal ward is a good idea, I expected it to be heavy for a day or so and then tail off. Have a friend coming over to go shopping this afternoon and a gym session tomorrow - I better cancel, just wanna stay in bed at the moment

I will try PN ward and then go back to the GP if no joy.

Check you temperature as well - shivering can be a sign of a high temperature.

Jennylee · 29/04/2008 09:41

Hope you have phoned the ward, that does not sound normal.

MissingMyHeels · 29/04/2008 09:50

Ward told me to book an emergency appointment with GP and insist I am seen today or go to A&E, they did indeed say it's not normal.

Thanks for the nudge in the right direction.

Well done for ringing them and well done them for telling you that (I thought they might tbh).

Good luck getting seen and treated. Hope you feel better soon.

Let us know how you are Missingmyheels

MissingMyHeels · 29/04/2008 16:59

Back from the docs, he thinks I have an infection either where I was sewn up or potentially and infected retained placenta type thing (well done Dr.DumbledoresGirl) - yuk. On anti-b's and have blood test and scan on Friday morning to check which it is, so bloody good job I went!

Belgo - GP did my temp and it was pretty high and now have to check it 4 hourly to keep an eye on it and you were right about that causing the shivers!

Excellent diagnosis skills all of you, thanks.

Sorry to hear this, but really glad you came on MN and I was part of the team who suggested you got seen quickly. Hope you get soon good news on Friday and the ABs work quickly. Time to tuck yourself up now and take care of yourself (not easy with a young baby I know, but try!)

DumbledoresGirl · 29/04/2008 17:28

not "soon", I meant "some"

HolidaysQueen · 29/04/2008 17:47

Oh MMH - just spotted this. Poor you! Hope the ABs work and that you get sorted out on Friday.

Jennylee · 29/04/2008 21:24

Hope you feel better on Friday, I feel for you as I know you were feeling really good from another thread you were on and were planning to start going to the gym and stuff. Is just a setback but hopefully the medicine will work and you will feel better soon.

belgo · 30/04/2008 11:54

Glad you've got treatment - that could have been very very nasty if untreated!

Get well soon!
