persistent low grade tummy ache in 6 year old

Poor old ds1 (6 yrs old) has just had a tummy bug - threw up sat night and generally poorly with tummy ache yesterday and today. To find out if he was ready to go back to school today/ tomorrow, I've been asking him how bad his tummy ache is on a scale of 1 to 10. This evening, he said it was a '2', which was quite good because normally it's a 3.

I was a bit as I'd been vaguely aware that he complains of a tummy ache on and off but carries on eating/playing/going to school/normal life really. How normal is it to have a permanent tummy ache? I can't quite work out whether he's unbelievably stoic and I'm bad mother par excellence or he's just exaggerating.

Bit of health background - he has nasal polyps which means that he has a permanent runny nose (and is booked to see dr at hospital next month about possible addenoidectomy -sp?-). Otherwise healthy, prone to tears although I've always put that down to him being my pfb.

Help/advice anyone?

I would take him to the GP.

Could it be the cattahr (sp?) giving him a tummyache?

Orinoco - thank you, I think that rings a bell. And I can feel a bit less like a rubbish mum.

avenanap - I didn't take ds1 to drs about his snotty nose for ages as I kept thinking that it would sound stupid to say 'he has a snotty nose'. When I eventually did, first gp said 'oh, it should get better in a couple of weeks'. After two weeks, I went to see another gp who bothered to look up his nose and saw polyps. However, catalyst to get us to gps in the first place was ds - he suddenly one day sounded really fed up and depressed about his snotty nose. If he's coping with his tummy ache (I think he'll be back at school tomorrow) I'll wait and mention it at hospital - appt in just over two weeks. Eek, must ask a qu about addenoidectomy...

All doctors are different. Find a good one and stick with them. I have to wait ages to see mine because he's good and everybody knows it.

What would you like to know. I've seen a few done.

Yes my DTDs always get a painful tum 24hrs before any virtually any illness. Can take 7-10 days to settle dwon afterwards too. Some illnesses are worse than others.

Apparently the medical name is mesenteric adenitis.

ibuprofen just about keeps my DTDs pain under control and it is an anti-inflammatory too.
