I started having painful episodes about 3 years ago where I get pain right upper abdomen which feels like someone is squeezing my insides, the pain is in my upper back too. These episodes used to come every couple of months and last around 4 hours.. I passed them off as indegestion or trapped wind, they were painful but not enough to make me worry. Last May i ended up in A&E with the same pain but my god it was awful, lasted about 8 hours. Had an ultrasound which they said was fine and sent on my way and told to keep an eye on it. Over the last 6 months I have had a few more attacks and the last two (one last month and one last night) were so much worse than any of the others. Last night it lasted over 12 hours and I vomited, i had 2 red hot baths, took ibuprofen/rennies/buscopan and it didn't touch it. At one point i was on all fours crying because it hurt so much. Now im very tender and achy. I have booked a drs appointment for this afternoon but feel like i'm going to be brushed off due to my ultrasound being normal last year.

Has anyone else had this happen? Normal ultrasound but gallbladder pain?

Yes this happened to me. Twice in A and E with extreme pain and dry vomiting.

I was scheduled for gall bladder removal but this was reversed after they told me my gall bladder was perfect.

I asked if I could have passed stones and they said if that was the case I would still have stones as they don’t come in ones and twos.

I have an endoscopy this week and hope to get a concrete answer.

I talked to a women in hospital who was going through similar.

It seems to be a tricky process and all you can do is be patiently persistent so you don’t drop out of the system.

Take care.

Did you get a referral from your GP? I'm worried as it seems to be happening more frequently and have gotten much more intense. Kicking myself now because when I read the symptoms of it it seems so obvious but there was me thinking I had indegestion eating rennies 😂

I was brought in by ambulance twice as the pain made me pass out.

Maybe you should get a referral if you haven’t already.

I think you need more tests. An ultra sound can’t find everything.
It can be a process of elimination but you may need to push/ request the next step.

I was diagnosed with gallstones around 17 years ago. Nothing was ever done about it and I don't recall any episodes of pain in the years following. In fact, I'd forgotten about it.

Fast forward to last year. I had the most excruciating back and shoulder pain for around 4 months . I assumed it was bad posture until the pain was so bad (and by then had moved into my stomach)I took myself off to a&e. An ultrasound and then later an mri scan confirmed I had an infected GB. I had it removed 2 months later. The surgeon said it was jam packed with stones. I remember asking him if removal was the only option and he said yes, as stones were an indication the GB was no longer serving it's purpose.

I went to the GP yesterday who listened to everything I said and agreed it was classic symptoms of gallbladder inflammation/stones. He then went on to say “but as you have had clear ultrasounds I doubt it is” he’s now sending me for another ultrasound and has prescribed me omeprazole

My MIL has recently had a bad episode with gallstones she ended up in A&E too she would normally take codine and then that would shift the pain but nothing would shift the pain so she ended up calling 111 and with what she was describing they sent out an ambulance to her when they came to get her she stood up and was feeling faint so they had to get her on the stretcher thing into the ambulance she was vomiting too she went to the hospital and was there most of the day and they gave her some sort of pain relief and said if it shifted the pain she'd be able to go home anyway it eventually shifted and she went home but had to come back for an ultrasound and found that she was riddled with them and they told her surgery would be best but it's a 2 year wait so gave her some antibiotics to try and clear some her self now she's constantly on edge and always taking paracetamol/codine out with her because she doesn't know when it's gonna flare up next she said this time was the worst she's ever had it she's never been hospitalised with it before
