DH won't go to GP, gut issues

*ck. So turns out DH, 44, has been having gut issues since summer ar least. I am sure he is not telling me everything. He has always been prone to constipation but recently he lost a lot of weight. We both attributed it to stress and he had some issues with teeth that made chewing really difficult for a few months. He also walks a lot with out dog (2-3,5 hrs per day).

However he had 2 incidences of a vert large stool which was very painful to pass, with blood on toilet tissue afterwards, after a few days of constipation. It happened this week and earlier in June. He didn't go to a GP and refuses to go now, saying he will decide what he needs to do and that we will fall out if I keep insisting and that he is regretting telling me. I am now worries his weight loss is a sinister sign, even though we do have a sort of an explanation to it. I can't straight and am massively overreacting and he is getting annoyed.

Has anyone been through similar symptoms? please tell me there are other causes than colon cancer??

I've ordered him a private fit. Nearest GP app is month away ( and he won't want to book it anyway). What do I do?

Do you have a private GP service nearby?where you can get an earlier appt.If he won’t see a doctor there is little you can do but understand why you are worried.

Dunno as I'm not a doctor but with constipation and subsequently blood from the likely piles I wouldn't immediately jump to cancer. I have same problem and GP checked for piles which were duly confirmed. If the reason for the weight loss is teeth issues there's nothing to worry about, but obviously if you're not really sure, do pursue it further as it is always something doctors will want to investigate when there's no reason.

I had teeth issues and dropped from 14
Stone to 6 stone, so I wouldn't immediately jump to cancer. The blood is most likely piles.

See how he goes for a bit.

He is absolutely right, OP. You do nothing. Our health is private to each of us - we make our own choices.

Has your surgery got an E consult or similar. They will have on the day appointments for urgent issues he would just need to get up early and ring or complete a form.

He really could speak to a someone maybe private GP if he wants to avoid his own Dr initially for whatever reason. You can get stool softeners. The explanation may not be as sinister as he or you might think. Or if it is its really better not to put off. But you know this you just somehow need to get your DH on board (without falling out). He must be very scared.

Passing a large stool after a period of constipation sounds fairly normal. Bright red blood on toilet paper when a stool has been painful to pass suggests a haemorrhoid.

I'd use germaloids cream or suppositories for a while, and think about what's causing the constipation. Does he drink enough and eat enough fibre, fruit and vegetables?

If he sees very dark/black when he wipes that's more concerning than red blood. Ultimately though if there's a definite change in bowel habits that's lasted a while, I agree it's best to get seen if he can be persuaded.

Maybe you could ask him what concerns him about going to the GP. He might be embarrassed, or worried about what they will tell him, or about being referred for a colonoscopy. Talking about his concerns might help him come to terms with them.

Our GPs are actually very good and I was always able to get an urgent appt when I needed to

Problem is that he doesn't want to call up. Amd I don't think I can make an appt for him with all the GDPR bollocks no?

I don't think he is scared enough. He said that he "hasn't made his mind up whether to see a Dr or not" wtf

Sounds like he’s tore slightly after having constipation but any change in bowel habits is worth being checked.

skinnyoptionsonly · 24/11/2024 22:45

I wouldn't be jumping to cancer here.

Constipation leads to large stool.
Large stool often flares up piles or creates small tear

If blood is red and appears after the movement I wouldn't be rushing to doctor.

Wurlywurly · 24/11/2024 22:49

So he's always been prone to constipation so this isn't new? Passing a large stool and a bit of bright red blood isn't am obvious concern either. The weight loss on its own would be worrying but assuming he ate a lot less when he had teeth issues that would also be an obvious explanation? I kind of think that you're making 2 + 2 = 5.

But it is probably still worth him seeing the GP just for a general check up, probably blood tests due to the weight loss. See what the FIT test comes up with. They are very sensitive.

Yes he has been eating a lot less, he had braces put in and it did affect him a lot. Plus we stopped having sweet snacks at home. He did lose his muscle bulk though, he looks incredibly thin now. I am beyond myself.

I asked him to make an appt, and we fell out. So there is that.
