Positive FIT test

I’ve been having looser stools for almost 2 months now. I had a baby (c section) early Sept and then had to have antibiotics due to incision infection, I also then had to cut out dairy due to baby allergies. Just after that, my bowel movements changed. At one point I was going twice a day, I thought maybe the antibiotics messed up the microbiome but surely it wouldn’t go on this long? I’ve been taking dairy free probiotics. I also thought maybe the change in diet? But surely cutting out dairy would make it go the opposite?

anyways, I went to the docs as I’d now gotten a hemerrhoid that was quite painful. They gave me a FIT test and a test for infection. No calprotectin test. Anyways, infection was negative but FIT was positive. Doctor said it was only just “in range” for a positive so has sent me home to do a re-test as he’s sure the blood would be from the hemorrhoid (which has since gone). I’ve now noticed bloody mucus and also clear mucus in the toilet (but sometimes I can’t work out if it’s from postpartum bleeding/discharge as that’s been on and off since birth) but im 99% sure the new FIT will still be positive.

can anyone suggest would possibly could be happening, aside from the big c word? I know you can’t diagnose me but as a mother of 3 it’s like my brain can’t help but catastrophise. I’m only early 30s and I’ve never had any kind of digestive problems!

Internal haemorrhoids maybe? ETA - that's what mine was.

The overall positive predictive value of a positive symptomatic FIT test for colorectal cancer is around 7%, which means about 93% of symptomatic patients with a positive FIT test will not have cancer. That will undoubtedly be significantly skewed by age, and although I don't have specific statistics for people in their early 30s I am quite certain the risk will be much lower for them as that age group is such a low risk population. Haemorrhoids can cause a positive FIT test (including asymptomatic internal haemorrhoids), as can polyps or bowel inflammation for any reason. A significant proportion of patients who undergo colonoscopy for a positive FIT test will not have any reason at all identified.

So the chances of this being a colorectal cancer at your age are very small. I understand why this is scary for you though and I hope any further investigations are done quickly so that you can have peace of mind.

Just came back to update. Second FIT test was fine, so it must have been the piles.

after still having loose bowels (and some becoming quite light and with undigested food in) i did a food elimination diet and have worked out that i most likely have celiac disease. Symptoms improved 2 days after cutting out gluten
