Has anyone used cloth sanpro (eg fairy hammocks) for post partum bleeding?

If so could you please recommend some for me? I haven't used cloth san pro before and don't know if it would be suitable for lochia, or which ones to try

A friend of mine used bamboo boosters from her dcs' nappies, and said that they worked brilliantly and didn't leak. Personally, I think I would prefer something with PUL backing - I used mama pads here before I discovered mooncups, and found them really comfortable and reliable. There are some makes that come in a larger size for post partum use, I think Ella's House nappies do them.

Thanks for the advice - the mama pads look beautiful esp the brocade ones....bit pricey just to get for post partum use though, I wouldn't be planning to wear them at any other time

what about these?

Hi Franny. I had some fairy hammocks made. Can't remember the exact combination, but if you email them, they are very helpful. Think it was an extra long with hemp layers inside. They were very good.

I also spend an obscene amount on Lunapads heavy pads and extra liners which were completely fab. Almost makes me want to have another to get my money's worth

oh thank you, I will email them, hadn't thought of that
the price (£25 for 6) seems doable even for a one off post partum thing
I could manage with 6 do you reckon?

I think you'd need more than 6. I had 6 FHs, 2 Lunapads with 2 extra liners, some older Lunapads for heavier periods and a few others. I washed them at 60 probably every second day. Are you using cloth nappies? You can wash them along with the nappies if so.

I don't suppose it's the sort of thing you'd consider using second-hand...

FrannyandZooey · 28/04/2008 21:40

I think if it is going to cost more than £25 it is unlikely to happen
it is only for the few weeks of postpartum bleeding
I can;t remember how often you need to change pads? oh dear I am out of practise with the whole subject

I don't see why you couldn't use second hand
only thing is that I would want to wash them on very hot wash first, and I think it might ruin them

Every couple of hours? I found bleeding pretty awful for the first day or so then like a heavy period for a few more. More noticeable after bf. After the first week it was much less.

Like I say, mine were washed at 60 and stood up. I have a stack you could 'borrow' if you're interested. Not sure there will be another baby for me.

I got some from ebay from a seller called Spiderink in the US. I found them very good and cheaper than Lunapads.
They had PUL backing and were topped with fleece which really didn't stain. If topped with flannel they can stain even when soaked. I didn't get them as postpartum pads just normal menstrual pads.

this seller!

I have a boxful of cut up old towels which I use normally to boost nappies.

After the first day of 'woah! we've got a spurter on E Wing!' type bleeding, I've used them for lochia with no problems. At least for days spent pootling about at home in tracky bums, iyswim...I just chucked them in the nappy bucket then put the lot on to wash at 60.

FrannyandZooey · 29/04/2008 08:33

thanks all, very helpful

Ceolas that is very kind and I may well take you up on that
I will just have to think about it for a bit and see if I can get my head around it - not something I have considered before, I hope that is ok

No problem. CAT if/when you've had time to think.
