Fall on knee 10 days ago

Just after reassurance!

I fell heavily on my knee ten days ago. Brusing is still coming out, knee is numb, swollen and very hot. I have arthritis in it. It throbs and is stingy (which is very odd, it does sting!) but I can walk on it. No broken skin.

I did RICE at the time.

Am I just a bit stupid and it will get better?

I live alone with a new rescue dog with newly developed separation anxiety (she was fine first few weeks), dog sitter is expensive, I've not even been able to bob to the chemist for my flu jab yet. (Another post, but working on the training!) In short, am I an idiot and it will be fine? Any suggestions as to get it back to normal ASAP?

I've no one to leave doggo with apart from the sitter and I can't afford that.

Anyone else had a similar mishap and how long did it take to get back to normal? Any speedy healing tips? I feel such an idiot!

I'd have gone to A&E. can you get someone to sit with your dog while you go. A friend or neighbour? You need to be assessed by a medical professional and xrayed. It's possible to fracture your kneecap in a strange way that makes it not as obvious that you've broken it and you'd still be able to walk in it. It's swollen and hot which are red flags especially with existing arthritis and you need to go to A&E. I'm a retired nurse for what it's worth. I hope you get seen asap and get some relief from the pain followed by a speedy recovery.

I've had a similar injury and 3 months on I still have no sensation in my knee but physio has a 35 week wait for initial assessment so I'm looking into private. The cold this week has made it so much worse.

However, full movement/walking ability returned in around 4 weeks. I haven't tried running or strenuous activity though as I still have no feeling in the skin.

My knee took a year to be right after I tripped and landed on it!

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 24/11/2024 00:27

This happened to me and when it went hot a few days later I had excruciating pain up my whole leg and had to go to the walk in centre as it had healed over an infection. I’ve had dodgy knees ever since

Thank you, everyone. I'm not feeling exactly reassured!

I've been looking at Dr Google about odd fractures, bone bruises, physio and the rest and you've all said what I've googled.

Unfortunately, I've no one I can leave doggo with (one neighbour is 90, the other side is deep in chemo treatment). My friends all have dogs and mine is reactive. I could use the sitter, but assuming I have to pop to the UTC for an xray, that could be a six or seven hour wait and the sitter charges £15 an hour. I can't leave dog at home howling, it's not fair on the neighbours. I've only rescued the dog recently.

Bah! I'll have a think and find a way round this. I am getting a bit worried and would like it looked at. I'm 53 btw, no spring chicken!

Thank you all for taking the time to reply.

The dog situation sounds untenable. You need to get your knee seen to. It's too important to stay home because of a dog. Pay for the sitter somehow. You can't put a price on your health to the extent that you're ignoring your own pain for a doggo.

This Worse case scenario leave the dog.

Thank you and you are both quite right.

Dog was fine on her own initially, typically. And I have to shamefully admit that the reason I fell on my knee in the first place is because she tripped me up.

The UTC currently has a 44 minute wait according to the website. I've asked the dog sitter to come over when she's free (she's half an hour a way). I'll get cash out on my credit card to pay her. You're all right and confirming my fears that it does need to be looked at. It's happily throbbing now but still numb to touch, very hot and swollen.

I seem prone to dog related accidents! With my last dog, who was twice the size of this one, I was making toast and he was right by my feet and I didn't realise. I turned with toast on a plate to put it on the kitchen island to eat, tripped over dog, smashed the bridge of my nose on the edge of the island and came to on the floor, in a puddle of blood and dog looking happy because he'd eaten my toast! It was a broken nose and concussion that day 😆

I've also fractured my spine and broken my coccyx trying to learn to horse ride. And sprained my ankle on a wet floor whilst cleaning out my turtle's tank.

Maybe I'm allergic to animals in an accidental way!

Anyway, dog sitter is sharing her location and I can see she's just set off. I'll report back later. Thanks for kicking my rear into reality!

What did they say op?

OldTinHat · 24/11/2024 16:08

I'm back!

Apparently it's a hemarthrosis, bleeding in the joint. They've said continue with RICE and to go back if it gets worse or the swelling/heat doesn't go down in the next couple of days.
