How do you know its a gallbladder attack?

PleurePasLaBouchePleine · 23/11/2024 00:42

I had it before

What did you do before? Maybe call nhs direct if you don’t know?

GiveMeAbitOfSugar · 23/11/2024 01:07

What did you do last time and what was the advice if it happened again?

If it hasn’t stopped by now, you need to go to A and E. And be warned that you might need emergency surgery. If the gallstone doesn’t drop back down into the gallbladder, eventually it’s life-threatening if the blockage isn’t fixed. I had gallstones and would get those attacks, but they usually lasted no more than six hours and the stone dropped back down. It helped me to sit leaning forwards.

You should call 111 because if they agree you need to go to A and E, they’ll liaise with them and A and E will be expecting you. There’s no way to fix a stuck gallstone that isn’t dropping back down into the gallbladder except surgery.

A sign to look for that things are getting worse is jaundice. Check to see if the whites of your eyes have any yellow tinge or if your skin looks tan or yellowish.

Anyway, you should call 111 as soon as you can. Or you should just go to A and E.

I take 2 buscopan, apple juice and apple cider vinegar and a magnesium tablet. Alka setzler plus Hot water bottle really helps too.

ThreeDoorsDown · 23/11/2024 01:24

I feel for you. I had many years of gallstone attacks before I had it removed. That pain is hideous. Hope you are seek quickly and the pain subsides.

Oh, I’m so glad. A gallstone attack that doesn’t go away for that long is definitely an emergency. Don’t worry, it’s easy to fix, but it just needs to be done. Are they with you now?

Good luck! So sorry you’re going through this! Gallstone attacks are very painful. Sending hugs!

PleurePasLaBouchePleine · 23/11/2024 02:55

Thank you - I’m waiting but they gave me morphine to take the pain away a bit

I’m glad you’ve had some pain relief! Those gall bladder attacks are pretty vicious, aren’t they. I had two six-hour ones, which luckily resolved, and afterwards I felt SO tired, as if I’d been in labour! Speaking of which, I did some Lamaze breathing, lmao, and it worked a bit!

Are you alone? You might want to alert a family member if so, because you might get taken into surgery without much warning.

It was a relief when my gallbladder was finally gone. You’ll be OK!! I feel sorry for you being at the hospital. Sending you soft and gentle internet-stranger hugs!

PleurePasLaBouchePleine · 23/11/2024 03:17

thank you got your kindness ! The paramedics brought me here and my husband will come to pick me up later.

OK, good! Well, I’m off to bed now. You’ll be A-OK! And you’re in the best place.

I have had one that lasted best part of 24 hours . Couldn't get to hospital.

But since then I have buscopan on hand .
If I feel slight flair up I take it for a few days and it sorts it out so quickly .
Hope you are feeling a bit better. It's an awful pain

PleurePasLaBouchePleine · 23/11/2024 04:28

The morphine is starting to wear off but it’s ok? I has my blood test. Ordering buscopan now

I spent hours either on my hands & knees mooing like I was in labour or kneeling on the stairs with a hot water bottle on my chest when I had mine, then had one really bad attack when I must have passed the stone as when I had the operation my gallbladder was empty except for sludge, apparently the exit from it was massive, the surgeon thought the stone must have stretched it when forcing it's way out. I always felt better after I had been sick. Buscopan, pain relief & hot water bottles are your friend until you get it done.

OrlandointheWilderness · 23/11/2024 06:06

God I feel for you op, they are horrific. My last one was a big stone that decided to travel along my pancreatic duct. That was excruciating.
Have the blooming thing whipped out. Best thing I ever did!

Hi, how are you? Did you have to have surgery? Hope you’re doing OK!

PleurePasLaBouchePleine · 25/11/2024 18:58

Hi ! I’m fine ! The doctor at a&e was brilliant, she gave me antibiotics and pushed for me to have more tests and to be seen by a surgeon this morning. So I have a mri tomorrow and they will give me a date for a surgery. I’m amazed at how fast I have had all the appointments. I didn’t get fobbed off - they really are on it !

Oh, that's wonderful! You'll probably have it out via keyhole surgery. That's how I had mine out and it was a breeze. You'll have to eat low-fat until you have it out though, because it's fat that causes the attacks. When you eat something fatty, the gallbladder usually releases its bile in order to digest the fats. It sort of squeezes, to force the bile out through the tube that comes out of the gallbladder. Like toothpaste coming out of a tube. But if your gallbladder contains stones, those come up and try to get through the neck, but they get stuck, and that's the pain. My doctor said not to eat more than 10g of fat per meal until I had it out, including natural fats like avocado.

Best of luck! PM me if you have any questions about the surgery. It was just day surgery in my case.

Sapphire29 · 25/11/2024 23:17

Definitely a low fat diet as another poster has said. After surgery my diet went back to normal within a few weeks.
