I had the exact same fears about BC. It is really hard not to let your mind go there. With me, my consultant said he was very sure it was ulcerative colitis and he would eat his hat if it wasnt.
There's no use telling you to try not to worry as I remember very well what it was like. But please take heart from my case as I had the highest faecal calprotectin score my consultant had ever seen (Over 3 thousand). I couldn't keep even water down and was having diarrhoea all day and most of the night long. Accidents in the night, vomiting, stomach pain. But things improved once I got my colonoscopy done and was under the gastro team.
This part as I mentioned before is the worst. The waiting around really does a number on your mental health and it's extra rough at this time of year. I was very ill at the same time around Christmas. Christmas eve and the day itself were particularly horrendous but the following year I was in a much better place and had extra portions of Christmas Dinner to make up for what I couldn't eat the year before.
You will get through this. One day at a time x

awww thanks so much that has given me so much comfort I just read your message out to DH and even he said there’s some nice people out there .. he knows about my Mumsnet account and he know I always come on this for my wider community advice.. I will keep u updated on Tuesday with whatever the outcome is.. 1 last thing would they rule BC out there and then that’s all we need to know to put our minds at ease ♥️

Yes they ruled out bowel cancer there and then for me. I had a polyp removed which they biopsied but said it looked benign - I got the result of that back this week and they said it was.

Separately they took biopsies to check for UC - and the results of that were also clear.

So I don't know what was wrong with me. Probably an infection. I had jellyish red bits too.

It's worth noting that when people have colonoscopies, only about 9% have cancer (and remember of those, some will be very early stage and it's easy to get rid of). Some have polyps which are pre-cancerous, but once they find and remove them, that's that (I think they just call you back for another colonoscopy in about three years time). Some have polyps like mine which are no trouble at all, and the last 13% or so have nothing at all like my DH who was told he had a pristine bowel!

No worries at all. I think you have come to the right place for support on this particular board at least. Most have personal experience such as myself or have someone close to them who does.
I was gaslit by my family into thinking nothing was really wrong with me and I joined an anxiety forum where they again, gaslit me and made me feel even worse. It was an absolute awful time and I felt so alone and terrified.
That's why it's a pleasure to help someone out who is in the exact same position that I was in.

Your partner has age on his side and will get answers in the next few days. Action always helps with anxiety so although it is daunting, he must remember that he is taking all the right steps and will be in a much better position from Tuesday.

Keep talking to us if you need. Will keep watching this thread for updates x

fellow uc sufferer here, went through it all in feb, positive fit test, 2 week cancer pathway, honestly was shitting my self, pardon the pun 🙈 the bowel prep was interesting 😂, found the colonoscopy ok, found out results then and there, which was nice I didn’t have to wait, they took biopsy’s just to confirm everything, still have flare ups, but mostly under control with meds, water and movement. Couldn’t fault the NHS, I normally can tell when I’m having a flare up, I get so tired, but it’s manageable. Good luck to your husband on Tuesday.

Swissrollover · 10/12/2024 14:43

That sounds to me like UC. Hopefully they'll start him on meds very soon.

Bubbletrouble2 · 10/12/2024 14:46

Yes they are waiting for the biopsy’s .. cancer is ruled out thank the lord I am so grateful today… but just says proctitis … I’m looking at other threads and a lot of ppl r saying it’s UC…@Autumnal589 @sharpclawedkitten

Yes mine is proctitis , it just means where in the colon the ulcerated colitis is, ( proctitis is in the rectum) when I have a flare up I use suppository’s which work well.

Swissrollover · 10/12/2024 18:20

BTW, I was diagnosed with Pancolitis, which is UC affecting the entire colon. However, when a flare starts, I think it starts at the rectum and works its way along. (I was very ill at diagnosis.)

I agree with considering the suppositories. They are all I use now as they are more effective for me than the pills were.

ColitisSucks · 10/12/2024 20:48

So 'itis' means inflamed. (arthritis, gastroenteritis, colitis) Colitis is inflamed colon.

This picture tells you what the different stages of colitis are called. It always starts at the rectum, and as it progresses it spreads backwards further through the colon.

For Proctitis he might not need to take oral steroids, steroid suppositories or steroid foam enema might be enough to treat it - they have less side effects than oral steroids.

Eta - I've heard the one that says distal colitis be called left sided colitis.

Ulcerative colitis anyone. ??????
