Hysterectomy support

Hi all. I had a hysterectomy on 18th October and wondered if anyone else in the same boat. I can see past threads from some years ago but nothing recent and am interested to see how others recovery is going and happy to provide support to others. I had my surgery for fibroids and adenmyosis and tomorrow will be 5 weeks since the op. I am taking it easy and recovering slowly. Can't wait to be back to normal but at the same time am anxious about doing too much too soon!

I am 5 months post op. It’s definitely best to take it easy, even at 6 weeks post op I felt very weak. It was about 8 weeks post that started to feel much stronger, I started doing some yoga but slowly at first which has helped and also swimming was good. Good luck with your recovery.

Thank you. Yes, I am definitely taking things slow. It's the lack of any sort of follow up that worries me. From reading reddit and other American sites it's clear that women get reviewed at 2 and 6 weeks but we are left to fend for ourselves. I've also read too many horror stories of things going wrong but am trying to steer clear of those now!

Can I ask when you had a bath? There seems to be a lot of conflicting info on line.

I wasn’t given much information either. I swam in the sea after 8 weeks and had a bath after 8 weeks. As I understand it is 6 weeks minimum before anything can go in the vagina.
I think things go wrong if you have sex too early, or are lifting things or pushing yourself.
i still get some back pain if I carry shopping so I try not to pick up anything even slightly heavy.
i do pelvic floor exercises, there are good workouts on TikTok where they do a workout to a song that last a minute.
I had 10day appt for stitch removal and 6 week post op appt. Yeah I have heard in the US some women having daily phone calls post op from their gynaecologist!

I am coming up four weeks post surgery. I had complications after surgery so stayed in hospital for longer. After coming home I was at home for a few days and then was rushed in to hospital and had sepsis.
Feeling very weak and recovery is very slow. To be honest I haven’t been so poorly but it’s inwards and upwards hopefully .
Was barely given any guidance only no lifting/ no sex/ no hoovering and to take things very easy for at least six weeks.
Have extra issues going on what with the sepsis though.

Wishing you well op. It’s not easy .

  • Onwards not inwards!

Oh and I have had regular calls from my doctor and also my consultant but I think that’s because of my complications.

Thank you. I don't get any follow-up up at all. Am thinking of seeing a private gynae just to check all is well before resuming sex

Sorry to hear its been so rough for you. My dad has had sepsis twice so I know how scary that is. I hope you are on the mend now. Yes, I was really surprised by the lack of routine follow up and support considering the type of surgery. I wonder if it's due to the state of the nhs or the general downplaying of women's health issues.

Yes that’s a good idea

At my follow up I didn’t have an internal examination, just a quick look at abdo surgical site and given a copy of my histology report.

Giggorata · 25/11/2024 09:41

I am 3 weeks post surgery and haven't had any follow up.
Should I be expecting some?
I thought I would be called back in only if there were things to address after histology.
I’m feeling fine but knackered.

Barleycat · 25/11/2024 14:53

No I don't think we get one here. Seems in other countries they get two week follow up and then an internal to check stitches at 6 weeks. Glad you are recovering well.
