Hand foot and mouth in adult

omg I was not prepared.
I caught it off my toddler and I am in agony.
my hand blisters aren’t too bad but my mouth is awful , on my gums, cheeks, tongue, roof of mouth, tonsils everywhere - some as big as a 5p coin.

im struggling to talk and swallow. I asked my gp and she said this is normal with HfM (albeit she didn’t actually look in my mouth as this was over text)

I feel like I sound dramatic but goodness me this is a nasty. I also have one of the ulcers on the the rim of a partially erupted wisdom tooth and it has swollen up and radiating pain in my jaw.

can anyone say when the mouth ulcer symptoms alleviated for them? Today is day 3 since ulcers began.

My 16 month old Grtanddaughter had H, F&M last week (for the 2nd time). My son (baby's dad) has got it now - he started with a sore mouth (blisters) last Saturday and has only been able to eat soft foods like custard, soups, etc. He's been unable to talk. The blisters are going a bit now. Nobody else has caught it, thankfully.

Oh yeah it's bad

I don't know why there isn't a vaccine

^

Hmm, that sounds unusual.

When I had it my hands were incredibly itchy - so much so that I didn't sleep for three nights. Nails dropped off a month later (oh the glamour)

DD has had it 3 times and it's been awful each time

Pumpkinpie890 · 21/11/2024 15:47

My DD has it currently..2 days non stop screaming hasn't even slept..dreading the 6 month old getting it.

Can I ask what your first symptoms were? I feel full of flu and been taking lemsip so wondering if I'm coming down with it 😅

Not really unusual, the ulcers are all over the inside of her mouth and throat (as expected with HFM). I always warn mums about the nails when they have HFM in the house because I had no idea!

Blahblahblah2 · 21/11/2024 15:57

I had it as an adult and it was pure misery. Could barely use my hands for several days.

Nogodsnomasters · 21/11/2024 16:08

It's bad in children, it's hell on earth for adults. Similar to chicken pox. I was so thankful I didn't catch it when my child had it as a toddler because I'd saw my friend go through it as an adult and she suffered bad! My son was miserable with this and also had a double ear infection at the exact same time. There was no sleep to be had for about 6 straight nights. You have my full and utter sympathy. I really hope it fucks off soon for you. Highly recommend anbesol liquid from the chemist to numb the ulcers, it worked really well for my son to allow him just even drink fluids!

PinkCherryPie · 21/11/2024 16:10

Both baby and I had the spots mildly. I had lots of blisters on back of throat and no where else. He was similar. But the virus knocked me out physically for three weeks. Felt so poorly with it.

DazedAndConfused321 · 21/11/2024 17:21

I'm deaf in one ear due to HFM! Please seek medical help if it's unbearable, don't leave it too late. Rest and drink as much as you can, even if it means your little one has some more screen time than normal!

Frozenever · 21/11/2024 19:42

Thank you for all responses.

been using anbesol but it only provides relief for a few mins. Been doing salt water gargles too but no relief.

@Pumpkinpie890 first symptom was sore throat and fever.

@DazedAndConfused321 i never knew it could have serious consequences - nhs website says it’s a mild illness 🥴
it’s so hard to gauge as I am in such pain but the doctor said only call back if I can’t drink or wee.

I suppose with it being viral there really isn't anything they can do other than provide painkillers and treat you if you were to become dehydrated. Drinking through a straw might be easier as it hits the back of the throat quickly plus ice lollies all day long?

Thank you for all responses.

in case anyone searches this thread at a later date looking for answers!
I found days 4,5,6 the worst pain wise, it then got better quite quickly.
I found difflam mouth rinse provided some relief.
I found drinking fridge cold milk helped a little.
