.. what are you doing to help?

I’m menopause age although on HRT and I know gum recession can be exacerbated by menopause and obviously age. I have mild gum recession on two teeth. Started twenty years ago, so I have an exterior filling on one tooth, the one next to it is going the same way. I’m not sure what I can do really. I’ve looked up pinhole surgery where they bring the gum down but the dentist I approached said it wasn’t bad enough to bother. It’s devotedly not bad enough for a gum graft.

I just wonder if anyone else has similar and if they have a regime or if some wonderful dental Intervention might be around the corner.

I have the same issue although I'm a little younger and my dentist recommended changing my toothbrush from oral B to Philips sonicare. I got one with an extra gentle brush head and I love it, it feels so much gentler on my gums.
My dentist also says mine is not bad enough yet for a gum graft but it's something I will need doing at some point (dreading that!)
It can be genetic as well as hormonal. My mom is also a bit "long in the tooth".

I’ve also got gum recession, l would be a candidate for gum graft, where 2 bottom teeth are.I see a hygienist every 3 months, dentist twice a year, which really helps.l’m really interested in this post, would be good to hear other people’s experiences.

I recently started using a water flosser before I clean my teeth every morning and night, I also use a tooth brush that tells me if I’m pressing too hard/not hard enough. Since then I’ve been told my teeth and gums are perfect.

This is a very interesting thread and I have experience of this - I too have a filing over one area lower tooth and was told the tooth was stable - however, a new dentist moved the filing and the recession has got much worse to the extent that I need a gum graft - I am not menopause and have good dental hygiene - my recession was aggravated by food stuck in a little pocket - would urge anyone with any recession around teeth to monitor this - would also recommend seeing a periodontist who will take x-rays - recession can be serious and should be dealt with sooner rather than later - the gums are important and need to be healthy to be grafted - hope this helps!

They can do a bone graft where they pull the gum over the fake bit of bone. I’m seeing a periodontal dr soon.
Ive looked after my teeth but it’s genetic. Dont beat yourself up.

A perio can also graft soft tissue from one area of mouth to the area where needed - it's quite a skill - me too seeing perio for treatment - from my understanding it takes up to 2 weeks to heal - sutures are added to graft the tissue...sounds joyous!

What the heck is a gum graft? 😱
Sounds horrendous. I've got receding gums but my dentist hasn't recommended doing anything about it.

It's really important to get the little brushes and give the gums a deep clean down inside the gum line. Your gum pocket goes further than you think. If it's not clean the gum can't tighten around the tooth and this starts the gum recession.

I'd start off asking your hygienist about a periodontal professional clean and go from there.
