Gallstones

Hi everyone
I’ve just returned home yesterday from a hospital stay due to cholecystitis. I also had tonsillitis at the time and then caught a cold.
Lots of my bloods were either high or low due to these reasons. I’ve got one more day of antibiotics to take.
Today I received a phone call to offer me the 3rd of December for my gallbladder removed (not the same hospital as previous stay) so my pre op is in 9 days time.

Does anyone know if that’s enough time for bloods to improve?
Hopefully someone has got some advice to offer. Thank you in advance.

What element of your blood test are you hoping will change?

roseandrainbow · 19/11/2024 21:34

I’m not totally sure what bloods they check for but possibly infection and inflammation.

I went in with sky high CRP levels and all was fine.
If they are offering you a date I’d grab it with both hands. Life with gallstones is awful

I had my gallbladder out while admitted to hospital with a gallbladder infection, raging temperature and 3 days worth of necrosis from my gallbladder slowly rotting while they tried to fix it with IV antibiotics.

It sounds like they want it out if they're offering you a date in a couple of weeks rather than 18 months so I'm not sure the blood results would prevent them from doing the op.

@Cannedheat1999 Ah thanks for sharing your experience. Crp is one of my bloods that was showing high. Oh I definitely will be grabbing the date. Comes to something when you’re excited about an operation rather than living with the dread of pain.
@InfoSecInTheCity Oh goodness it sounds like you had a right time. I was put on the surgical ward at my local hospital with the possibility of having it removed but then they decided to discharge me and said they would do it after Christmas.
I know I’m extremely lucky to be given a date so soon. It’s a private hospital but I’m an nhs patient so that’s why the wait is quicker but 4 weeks from seeing a surgeon is amazing.

My mum had gallstones with cholecystitis and jaundice in the summer. The jaundice improved with IV antibiotics otherwise they were going to remove it straight away. She was 6 days post op from another laparoscopic abdominal surgery so in an ideal world they wanted her to recovery from that first. She stabilised and was discharged after a week of IV antibiotics and had it removed 6-8 weeks later I can't remember exactly. There was no question about her liver function or any other bloods etc before the removal

My sister had gallstones as a teenager. It took 3 years for them to be diagnosed during which time she had back to back illnesses and multiple hospitals admissions for infections. So take care with illnesses too. She was finally diagnosed after the gallstones moved to her pancreas and caused acute pancreatitis and sepsis. They had to put a stent in first as she needed to recover from the pancreatitis before they operated again. An admin error meant there was actually quite a long gap. I can't remember what tests they did prior to her surgery in the end it's been 15years

@Superscientist Oh wow what an awful time they have went through. I really hope that they have no more problems caused by the gallbladder. All of my preop bloods gave me the go ahead for surgery and I’m now a week post op.
