DS2 is being referred to optometrist for eye tests - anyone got experience of this?

DS2 is nearly 10 weeks old.
At his 6 week check the GP noted that he wasnt following things with his eyes and to keep an eye on it, but that she thought he was probably ok and was just running a bit behind.
HV saw us the same day and said to go back in 2 weeks and be re-checked.
We went back last week and he still wasnt following things. I hadnt been too worried as he had started smiling at me in the mean time. However the HV mentioned that he may be smiling in response to my voice rather than because he could see my face.
She told us to go back to GP today and get referred to see an optometrist to have him checked out.

His eyes look normal (although whites of his eyes are blue, but think that is normal for babies?), his pupils contract and expand with light and dark..

Has anyone else had experience of this? Is 10 weeks very late to be following and focussing??

Dd3 was picked up as having a squint at her 6 week check and referred to the local eye unit. She was 4 months by the time she was seen. She saw an orthoptist first who had a good look for her squint and tried to judge how far in her eye turned. She then went through to have drops put in her eyes to dilate the pupils before seeing the doctor. She was a little put out at having the drops done but not much and soon went back to sleep. The doctor had a good look in her eyes with a few different lenses and told us she was very shortsighted. Dd3 would be able to look at our faces when we were very close to her and could only follow things that were very close to her face too. She's 2 now and has worn glasses from being 7 months old, she looks odd now without them on!

10 weeks is still very little, maybe your hv should have chosen her words a little more wisely. How do you feel his eyes are, are you worried? The eye tests are not a horrible experience so may be it would be worth getting your ds2 checked?

Thanks for your message. I am very much hoping that DS is short sighted (or just lazy) rather than blind.
Went to see GP today and she couldnt tell if he can see or not. He wouldnt follow things for her either.
She has referred us to the hospital, but we may have to wait 8 weeks for an appointment.

I hate the waiting and worrying. I would rather know sooner eaither way...
