Headlice in olive oil slaughter shock!

DS#2 came home from school on Thursday itching. Combed him Thursday night to get rid of the living beasties. Saturday night I Hedrined all the DCs to be on the safe side. Not enough left for me and I forgot to get any more on Sunday. So considering that Hedrin kills the little blighters by more or less drowning them, I wondered if olive oil might help. Rubbed about a tablespoon of oil in and left it for 10 mins. Combed it out and it worked brilliantly. Unlike conditioner when I find the conditioner stops me seeing the lice on the comb, I could see them clearly and as far as I could tell they were all dead! So I gave myself a really thorough comb and I think I got rid of most of the eggs too ? they just seemed to slide off the hair. Only down side was it took about 4 shampoos to get rid of the stuff? but hair OK now.

Anyone else been desperate enough to try this?

will try that when DS1 brings the little buggera home as we have to olive oil him regularly anyway due to horrid dry scalp!

minster · 28/04/2008 11:56

I've heard people ue vaseline as well ... but olive oil is much easier to wash out.

FrannyandZooey · 28/04/2008 11:58

olive oil does stop them moving for a while and eventually will suffocate them, but you'd have to keep it on overnight to kill them

plus don't forget there will be new little ones hatching out from the eggs (eggs not killed by olive oil) so repeat the combing every 3 or 4 days, for at least 2 weeks or until all eggs and lice are gone

Olive oil and wrap some cling film round your head worked for me when I was desprate

leave the cling film on for 2 hours

OrmIrian · 28/04/2008 12:00

I will franny. It was just an emergency measure as I was itching horribly and I find it really hard to comb them out of my own hair (DH blardy useless) with conditioner.

Was it extra virgin cold pressed from a little estate in Tuscany or Bertoli?

We are currently plagued by the blighters.

OrmIrian · 28/04/2008 12:01

Of course chuffin. Only the very best for my hair

I bet you will all have lovely gleaming hair after this

chipmonkey · 28/04/2008 12:03

My cousin who is a GP and a Mum recommmended mayonnaise left on overnight!

Chuffinnora · 28/04/2008 12:06

Overnight? How would you begin the sleep with a headful of mayo?

Chuffinnora · 28/04/2008 12:07

Begin to sleep

Organic? Bugger me, no! I'd cover my head in DDT if it would do the trick...

made with organic free range eggs laid by cornfed hens, organic olive oil imported from Sicily, aged balsamic vinegar and mustard seeds ground in a granite pestle and mortar by a 16 year old virgin.
Or maybe just that stuff from LIDL.....

cluckyagain · 28/04/2008 12:17

How delicious - I bet they smelt good enough to plaster with cheese and ham in the morning. (with extra protien built in already!)

FrannyandZooey · 28/04/2008 13:06

they say if you want to leave it overnight, use clingfilm, but I can't imagine sleeping like that
personally I would rather just wet comb

I always use oil - almond smells nice, but even baby oil works. You don't need to clingfilm their heads, just put a towel over the pillow. The eggs all slide off nicely when you comb in the morning as well.

OrmIrian · 28/04/2008 14:11

I must admit I did seem to get rid of quite a few eggs too rosa. I know it won't kill the eggs but it made it easier to get rid of them. Hedrin works but it's too expensive to use all the time.
