Why did my mum have a liver scan?

Any knowledgeable people about?

My mum just told me she's had a liver scan, with contrast, this week. She has never had any liver issues before so I'm concerned why this would have been ordered. No one had told her about it before she got the appointment letter. She is on medication for osteoperosis, and also had a heart ablation recently, which resulted in an aneurysm for which she was given thrombin, then 3 weeks of blood thinners. Could it be routine as a result of any of that??

I have told her to ring her GP and ask why it was ordered and what the concern is about her liver. Is there anything else she could do to try to find out what's going on?

The most probable reason for the scan relates to her osteoporosis medication. Many osteoporosis drugs require liver monitoring as they can affect liver function. This is particularly true if she's taking bisphosphonates or other common osteoporosis medications.

The recent cardiac ablation and subsequent complications could also be relevant. The thrombin treatment and blood thinners she received might have prompted her healthcare team to want a clearer picture of her liver function, as the liver plays a crucial role in blood clotting and medication metabolism. However, this would typically be accompanied by blood tests rather than a scan as the primary monitoring tool.

Thank you so much @RedHotWings that has calmed me down a bit to know it might be routine! I will still pester her to find out for sure.

Can you download the NHS app for her and see if there’s any information there.

Turned out it was something they found while she was in hospital with the aneurysm, and they wanted to follow up with a proper liver scan. She thinks they did tell her at the time but because they said it wasn't anything to worry about it she forgot about it (which is reasonable, it was a terrifying time in relation to the aneurysm). So all good I think - they just wanted to check on it but it shouldn't be anything to worry about.

Thanks for the help!
