Would you get this lipoma removed? [pic of upper inner thigh]

I've had this lipoma for about 4 years. It is about twice the size as it was when I first noticed it.
It has been checked by my GP and confirmed to be a benign lipoma so advice was to only remove if it bothers me. Physically I can feel it a little between my legs. I don't think anyone would notice it when I swim as 1) I don't think people are looking at my crotch! and 2) I tend to wear boy shorts. I don't mind if people do notice anyway.

Pic attached. I've included my pants so it's easier to see the position.

I am 54, slim and healthy.

I've said it's a sensitive photo only because of its location.

I would because it would annoy the fuxk out of me. Can you get it removed on NHS?

AudiobookListener · 17/11/2024 15:06

To make this decision you need information. What will/might happen if you have it removed? What's the worst thing that could happen and how likely is that? How much time off work? What sort of scarring? Then what will/might happen if you don't have it removed? Then weigh up the pros and cons. Personally, I think people often have things done which might have been better left alone!

LivingLaVidaBabyShower · 17/11/2024 15:15

It sounds like you aren’t fussed.
all procedures come with risk, so on that basis I’d leave it alone until it’s problematic

FeelinglikeEeyore · 17/11/2024 15:25

I had/have the exact same thing in same position. I run a lot and it annoyed me a lot when I wore shorts, so they agreed to remove it on the nhs. Op was simple and quick, although it did get slightly infected and I needed antibiotics afterwards. However, the most annoying thing...it grew back exactly the same. I am so disappointed 😞

I had one in a similar place. I got it removed the operation was simple and quick. I asked to see it when they took it out.

It was the size of a chicken breast! Looked like it too. It was much larger than they expected.

I'm glad I had it taken out. No scarring at all.

Look into phosphatidylcholine injections

lipoma · 17/11/2024 17:28

Thanks all and especially to @AudiobookListener
I had it in my head that if I make an appointment to ask these things it indicates I want to go ahead with it, when in fact you're absolutely right, I can't make an informed decision w/o that information.
I suppose I feel a bit bad making a GP appt for something not that important.

You get left with a scar and there is a risk it can regrow.

However, if it starting to annoy you or chafe on clothing, it is time to get it removed.

I had one, lived with it for years no problem. Then it grew a bit and started rubbing on clothing. Then it grew a bit more and started squashing my femoral artery. NHS went from we don't fund this sort of vanity thing to get it out ASAP.

lipoma · 17/11/2024 18:43

@FeelinglikeEeyore I am also a keen runner. It hasn't impacted that at all.
It's not completely between my legs, but more to the back so while I can feel it touching the other thigh when I'm not wearing clothes that cover it, it's not a bother. It's certainly not rubbing or chaffing.

NHS will not remove lipomas for cosmetic reasons. I would argue that it is effecting your mobility rubbing and chaffing and becomes painful. GP may refer on NHS then.

2k private.

Well I would only want it removed for reasons other than cosmetic (I don't have a compelling reason to have a perfectly smooth upper inner thigh!) and my GP mentioned the above clinical reasons.

I don't think I need it removed now, it's interesting to read the experiences of others who have had them removed.

Personally, I’d get it removed. My DH had a lipoma removed from his arm - easy surgery, no issues at all, very pleased with it. Didn’t come back. My DB had 3 lipomas removed from his thighs. Again, very happy with it. I’ve had a couple of moles removed. All of us very happy with all of the removals.

Rub castor oil on it and it will disappear.

Look up Barbara Oneil's videos on YouTube.

My dog has some Lipoma's appear and the vet said leave them until they get too big and then they will remove them.

I didn't like the sound of that so did my research and massaged in castor oil on his bumps and they have all gone except dow the two biggest ones which have dramatically decreased and are barely noticeable now.

Have you got any clinical sources to back this up?
