Twitching eye - for 9 months! At wits end!

mumyes · 15/11/2024 18:53

Just that really - it's the muscle underneath my left eye, just above my cheek.

It has twitched - on & off every few days - for over 9 months now & it's doing my head in!!!!

My GP is utterly uninterested, suggested I ask my dentist...

Can anyone suggest ways of getting rid of it?! Im getting plenty of sleep.

Help please!

Magnesium supplements?

mumyes · 15/11/2024 18:57

Thsnkyou! Is that a thing? What is magnesium supplements meant to do?

Seagullslanding · 15/11/2024 18:58

Agree...magnesium, or magnesium/electrolyte

UpTheAnte · 15/11/2024 18:59

Have you had an eye test? Mine went on for months, GP said to have an eye test before she would refer me to neurology. She was right, I needed glasses. I thought my sight was fine.

Seagullslanding · 15/11/2024 19:00

Our modern diets/ways of farming mean that we are not getting the right amount if magnesium in our diets. I also get achy muscles as well as twitchy eye. I take a daily supplement.

rainbowhairchalk · 15/11/2024 19:02

I take zinc tablets to stop it, works a treat. I also take magnesium

Alwayslurkingsometimesposting · 15/11/2024 19:04

I had this- it was awful. Ended up getting referred to a specialist eye hospital and had it frozen with botox. This needed repeating every few months for about a year. The consultant suggested it was caused by stress. I think he was right in retrospect. Anyway I feel for you OP- it drove me bonkers!

Kaleidoscopic101 · 15/11/2024 19:09

Magnesium helps with a bunch of things and we don't always get enough form our diets but some things like Brazil nuts are a good source. One of the things is modulating nerves and muscle contractions.

mumyes · 15/11/2024 19:54

Thank you so much, all.

It has been a stressful year but not all year all the time & the twitch has not stopped. I shall get some magnesium & zinc & hope that helps.

I had thought of Botox but I really don't want to go down that route...

Off to take my twitching friend to watch some telly! 🤦‍♀️

How long did yours go on for?

Go to your optician.

They are often very good at spotting /understand eye related conditions.

Mine spotted I probably had Myasthenia Gravis after twenty odd years of me battling symptoms and being dismissed by doctors. He wrote a robust letter to my GP surgery Grin. I will always be so grateful to him

SleepmonkeyT · 15/11/2024 20:00

Stress brings this on for me and I got rid of it by cutting out caffeine. It’s so annoying, I really sympathise.

LadyGabriella · 15/11/2024 20:04

Reduce stress. Reduce caffeine. Take a multivitamin including magnesium.

mumyes · 19/11/2024 18:24

Oh my god! I think you lot have sorted it!!!

I took my first zinc & magnesium tablets last night & no twitches at all today...

Fingers crossed it lasts...

That's awesome!

I was told you shouldn't take them together (something to do with absorption) so I take magnesium at night to help with sleep and the zinc in the morning 😊

Thank you for that.

I honestly can't believe that something which has plagued me for over 9 months of this year & which the GP couldn't really (seemingly) be bothered with has been (hopefully!) sorted by the mumsnet massive.

I'm so relieved..

Roll on Christmas!

I had the same.
Sounds like a vitamin deficiency.
Start taking multivitamins

Aw bless you, it's so bloody annoying! Wishing you an amazing non twitchy festive season 😊

mumyes · 19/11/2024 22:27

Thanks @rainbowhairchalk - you too!

I had this due to stress. Acupuncture sorted it.

snowlady4 · 19/11/2024 22:54

I swear by berocca. I bet it goes away if you take it for a week.
I see someone else suggested magnesium- it seems to be beneficial for absolutely everything!

Megwood77 · 19/11/2024 23:17

For me, an eye twitch just as you described is a sign of my iron levels dipping low. As soon as the twitch comes back I get a blood test and without fail it has dropped very low again. Might be worth checking your iron levels.

DottyDodger · 19/11/2024 23:21

I had this last year. For almost 6 months. Drove me absolutely insane.

Really, really long story cut short - it was stress/anxiety, and actually making it happen myself...In that, I expected it to happen, and it did. If I thought to myself 'oh the twitch hasn't happened today', guess what? It'd start. Like a self fulfilling prophecy.

Obviously worth checking physical health first, but mine went away when I started meditating (never done anything so wild in my life before and I loved it!!) calming my vagus nerve and just ignoring it. I had some other symptoms at the time and I ignored them too.

All gone now 😆

mumyes · 20/11/2024 08:52

Glad those of you who've also suffered are better now.

I honestly cannot believe it has just been fixed overnight with a £7 tub of vitamins!

I definitely agree though that nervous system stuff brought it on - it's been a very stressful year, and although I've taken steps to change that, the twitch still didn't go. The zinc & magnesium combo seems to have worked wonders though!

Glad it's helped you! What dosage of magnesium and zinc did you take? Did you take the zinc in the morning and magnesium before bed? Did you take multivitamins as well?
