Blood when wiping after poo

sidecg · 15/11/2024 09:12

I will see GP next week. Convinced it's cancer. Please don't scare me more

This morning I had blood after wiping on the toilet paper. Not loads and loads but not just a drop either.

Have a diagnosis of IBS following full investigations (including colonoscopy) 2.5 years ago.

Have usual erratic bowels (for my IBS), more mucus than normal the last few weeks, and now blood. I'm 31.

No real pain on passing stool, no specific constipation and nothing feels weird (like piles) down there,

I will get this seen to ASAP but please to get me through the weekend could anyone share when they have had similar and it WASN'T cancer please? So that I'm not a sobbing mess all weekend

Probably haemorrhoids or maybe colitis?

Newuser75 · 15/11/2024 09:14

I can understand your worries but it could be burst blood vessels due to the ibs.

I'd be thinking much more along those lines especially given your age.

Good luck x

JC03745 · 15/11/2024 09:15

What colour blood?

Bright red of far more likely to be a haemorrhoid/crack in anus.

Dark black, tarry colour is from further up the intestinal track and more worrying.
I'm glad you are getting it checked.

Letitgoe · 15/11/2024 09:18

Colours is a good indicator here. I have had bright red blood and that’s normally a good sign. It means it’s at the end of the system, where as older darker blood more brown is from higher up in the system which is normally more of a worry.

I have had mucus and red blood, I have ibs and it’s corrected itself over time. I got some haemorrhoid cream just incase and applied that.

Yes this ^^

And even dark blood is more likely to be an ulcer than cancer.

Bright red

Bright red

Bright red is 'good'

sidecg · 15/11/2024 09:53

Thanks all. Note that the NHS website says to wait three weeks in this circumstance, but I shan't be doing that!

Background to this is awful health anxiety but don't think I can say that this is all in my head this time 😂

Had this tons of times and its sorted itself out. Usually just a little tear.

albalass · 15/11/2024 10:39

I've had this quite a lot - started early 20s. Sometimes due to piles (but small ones, so only noticeable on examination by doctor) but on some occasions no piles were evident - but colonoscopy revealed my blood vessels in that area are very close to the surface so I'm especially prone to bleeding. Some people just have that apparently. So don't panic, at your age piles are the most likely explanation by far but definitely go to your GP to rule out anything more serious (and to get help with resolving piles).

Catandsquirrel · 15/11/2024 10:59

So many reasons for this OP. Could be just haemorrhoids, a ruptured vessel or a tear. Any constipation , even mild?

Some women develop endometriosis in the bowel tissue if it's around your period.

Please don't jump to scary scenarios, you've no need to. There's a whole plethora of benign possibilities (many people experience this at some point, it's just isn't advertised) and the way to deal with this is to get any symptoms checked. If anything needs treating, deal with it mentally only if it comes up, not before.

MassiveOvaryaction · 15/11/2024 18:04

I know how easy it is to jump to the scariest outcome. I ignored rectal bleeding that happened on and off for months because I was scared it might be something serious (sensible huh?! Hmm). When I saw GP he was really reassuring - bright red is the best kind of you have some sort of bleeding. I had a FIT test which came back positive so had an urgent referral on the 2 week pathway for colonoscopy. GP explained the letter would refer to cancer and not to be frightened by that because it was vanishingly unlikely that it would be that (he gave me some statistics but I can't recall them exactly so I won't quote). Mine turned out to be internal haemorrhoids. Was told by the consultant I could have them banded in clinic or just leave them and see how I get on. As long as I avoid being constipated everything is fine.

Please try not to worry Flowers

I hve bled for years and years had a colonoscopy after a very very high qfit and it was internal piles

sidecg · 15/11/2024 19:43

Thanks all for your kindness.

I get this from time to time and I believe it is caused by piles

DeliciousApples · 15/11/2024 21:54

It hurt when I went to the loo. Felt like it took ages to pop.

I had bright red blood on the paper. When I looked in the toilet pan it looked like someone had poured raspberry juice down it.

I got such a fright.

I just had IBS and needed to change my diet to foods that didn't cause problems - and not get constipated. The problem went away. It comes back if I eat forbidden food though.

Were you constipated too? If you were just eat things that you know give you softer stools for a few days. To let the area heal a bit. For her it's tinned fruit. That makes me go. I just have to eat the exact right amount or I go the other way!

Same. I also have IBS. I wouldn't worry.

Wendolino · 15/11/2024 22:00

If it stings and/or if the blood is bright red and fresh, most likely it's piles. You can have internal piles that you only know you have from the bleeding. They get damaged very easily by poo and wiping, because they are quite fragile and bleed easily. I was anaemic because mine bled so much.

Me too, so anaemic I had to have blood transfusions. Definitely needs investigating if it goes on too long

TurquoiseBear · 16/11/2024 10:49

I had this recently @sidecg
Bright red blood.
GP did a FIT test & some blood tests. All came back clear. Further investigations showed internal piles.
Thinking of you for next week.

champagneplanet · 16/11/2024 11:07

Mucus, blood and irregular/increased toilet trips were all the symptoms I had when I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis. I too had no pain.

There is so many things it could be - internal hemearroids, a fissure and it's very easy to jump to worse case scenario in your head. I was fast tracked and seen within 10 days (as was the norm at the time) so you are absolutely doing the right thing by seeing your GP.

Be kind to yourself, it's hard when you are worried Flowers

One consultant said to me - Nobody ever got anaemia from piles.
I said- both my cousin and I did!

I agree it needs investigating. Even if only piles, we're proof they needs fixing.

Yes haematologist said that to me. There was so much blood every day, I stupidly left it too long.
