So the other day I was taken to hospital, whilst waiting on Dr I was sitting on the bed in what's called the W
Anyways dr comes, sees me sitting like that and is shocked.... I tried to sit normally but was so uncomfortable and soon ended up back into the W
I always sit in that position and everyone says it's weird but now the drs response has me thinking they're right
Random pic off Google to show what position I mean

Are you hyper mobile? If I got into that position I doubt I’d get out of it again!

MumChp · 14/11/2024 03:55

It's unusual for a grown up. But not chocking.

I am yeah

Just asking as never thought about it till the Dr was shocked about it 😂 I'm 39, 3 kids and even sat that way throughout each pregnancy

I sit like that if I sit on the floor 56.
Not sure I'd sit like that on a bed though ?

Pyjamatimenow · 14/11/2024 10:38

I sit like that on the floor. It’s supposed to be unusual in adults. I probably wouldn’t sit like that in hospital though

I've been told that my style of sitting in a chair (feet up, in a ball) could indicate neurodiversity. At nearly seventy, that doesn't really signify anything for me.
But I’ve always found it really difficult and uncomfortable sitting “normally” in a chair, dining or armchair and, sod it, I will be comfortable!
(I have managed a W in the past but it”s a bit beyond my knees now.)

I love sitting in the W position but I am very hypermobile and have a muscle condition. My friend with Cerebral Palsy also loves it. I know it is not meant to be particularly good for you but it gives me my best stability and postural control!

Latenightreader · 26/11/2024 11:06

I’m sitting like that now and I’m 46 and definitely not hypermobile. My six year old told me off a few weeks ago and said her teacher told them it would damage their hips. I’ve always sat like this and find it very comfortable!

Thingsthatgo · 26/11/2024 11:30

It's a style adopted by children when they don't have a very strong core, as the W shape helps stabilise the upper body. We are meant to discourage it as a sitting position in toddlers.

EllaPaella · 27/11/2024 19:34

I can sit in that position and have done since childhood and definitely not hypermobile. I also have good core strength (have done regular yoga for the last 7 years). My husband always comments it's a strange position but it feels comfy to me if I have to sit on the floor for any reason.

Sitting like that can be a sign of hip dysplasia. I sit like that a lot because it’s very comfortable for me. When I was in my early 30s my hips got quite painful when I was lying on my side. I didn’t think much of it and assumed it was the beginnings of arthritis. Fast forward a few years the pain got very bad and I was diagnosed with dysplasia which now can’t be corrected because of my age.
So sitting like that might be fine. Or it might be a sign that your hip joints are wonky. But if you start getting hip pain definitely see a doctor asap. I’m in constant pain now and will be until it gets severe enough for an early hip replacement. But it could have been corrected if I was 35 or under.

Sitting like that doesn’t cause the condition (it’s a birth defect), but it is an indicator.

I’m in my thirties and this is my preferred position too! I thought it was to do with being hypermobile my legs feel too heavy to dangle.
