Bread is a problem - home made or shop bought. What can I have as I love cheese on toast?

DH thinks it may be the yeast in bread that is the problem but pasta is too and I don't think pasta has yeast in it.

Not sure what you're asking... Sorry! Do bread and pasta make you feel unwell? If so, it could be a gluten thing. You can buy gluten-free flour and make bread with it, though it's a bit 'cake-y' apparently. Would be worth a try, if only to see if you react to it or not.

I think I have developed IBS through stress and pasta and bread seem to be triggers.

What about the bergen bread - rye flour, i think and seeds.

Are you sure it's not a wheat allergy? Pasta has wheat and no yeast, bread has both.

try boiling batch of potatos, keep them in fridge then when you want a snack put cheese on them and grill them! When I make mash I always make too much then heat it up in microwave with cheese and brown sauce! better than bread any day. and no tummy ache

Ooh, poor you, NAB .

Baked potato skins with cheese.

Cook v.small baking potatoes for 15-20 mins under usual time, then slice into halves, top with cheese and return to oven to finish cooking. You could grill them for a minute or two at the end if you like the cheese really golden brown.

Field Mushrooms oven baked with cheese.

Clean mushrooms, season and brush with melted butter mixed with a little lemon juice. Place in baking dish gill side down and cook for 10-15 mins on medium heat. Then turn so gill side up, top with cheese and return to the oven for 5-10 minutes until mushrooms cooked and cheese golden.

Potatoes in their many and varied forms are my saviour when my IBS flares up.

NotABanana · 27/04/2008 17:26

I did wonder about wheat.

How can I find out for sure?

Have had 2 mouthfuls of DS1's cheese on toast and hope it is too small an amount to cause me pain.

Your GP should be able to refer you for some tests. Or try cutting bread/pasta etc out and see if you feel any better.

girlfrommars · 27/04/2008 17:35

The easy way is not eating it for a couple of weeks and seeing if that helps.

I'm fine with wheat most of the time, but once my IBS kicks off, I avoid it or suffer the consequences.

If you do suspect IBS, it really is worth talking to your GP. They'll be able to rule out anything else and give you advice (and possibly tablets!) if it is IBS.

I will mention it as due a visit in June. Thanks.

In the mean time, eat lovely potatos! They're cheaper anyway! And no added salt or additives!

NotABanana · 28/04/2008 21:01

I used to have a jacket potato most days for lunch and have got out of the habit since I had my youngest. I love potatoes so will go back to them.

what happens with wholemeal flour? it sounds more as though you are not getting on with refined flour. what is sold as 'brown' or even 'wholemeal' bread isn't necessarily what you'd think, try making some yourself (but use a good recipe or it will be denser than density itself)

Currently eating some toast made with bread I haven't bought before. It is Kingsmill Gold seeds and oat loaf. I hope I am fine with it as it tastes delicious!

I am fine with this bread. What does that mean the problem is?
