My dentist diagnosed gum disease😪😪 and it is on stage 4 already lost 50% of bones.

I am on 3 months cleaning programme, also been advised to improve daily oral hygiene.

Any relevant experiences and advice to improve this condition. Thanks

Oh gosh, you poor thing.

Interdental brushes are great, plus floss, and an electric toothbrush. Avoid sugars, of course.

Did your dentist advise on a regime?

Yes she said use flosses.
My gums were bleeding and sore for many years but other dentists never paid attention. They said it is just hormonal swelling.😪😪

I am glad she diagnosed the real cause of bleeding and swelling!

I've got gum disease with some bone loss and had it for thirty years. I have a couple of loose teeth but they're still there years on, no worse and my disease is stable despite not having a deep clean for ages.
Have just picked it up again under local anaesthetic as only way I can tolerate it.
Be meticulous with the interdental cleaning. I'm not sure there's any other answer.
It's a pain.

sonic toothbrush, interdental brushes, co-enzyme q10 supplement (makes a massive difference), swishing coconut oil around your mouth (oil pulling) for a few minutes once a day - all great for gums and keeping bacteria at bay (speaking from experience). Check your diet includes lots of vitamin C and other healthy vits and minerals.

bamboosockmonster · 12/11/2024 20:07

oh and probiotic supplement - certain ones great for gums. google it! I think it's lactobaccilus.

I would second all these recommendations. When I was using Coconut oil I had the only dental appointment I have ever had where they said my teeth were really good. I keep forgetting to do it now but this thread is reminding me, thank you!

What do you all do with the coconut oil? Just a table spoon of it into the mouth, or does it go in water or anything?

I have seen on youtube they were doing without water and for 20 minutes. I do not understand how they can keep in mouth for 20 min..

Yep it's in the mouth for 20 mins. I find it easier if I am getting into the shower first thing so do it then. After you spit it into the loo not down the sink as it can clog the drains. Then brush teeth. Don't swallow the oil. I can't always manage 20 mins as I get bored.

I've been referred to a local NHS dental hospital for this. I am almost 50, no fillings but poor gums and bone loss which is progressing despite good oral hygiene, my mum has had similar problems and has partial dentures now.

My first appointment I had a session with a hygienist who spent a time showing me how to use the interdental brushes to reach all the problem areas, recommended also using a single tufted toothbrush vertucally along the gum line and a regular electronic brush. This has reduced my plaque score even lower.

More recently I had a deep subgingival clean with (10!) injections. I'm back in 3 months for more xrays and to see if things have stabilised 🤞

The specilaist referral has given me some hope although I do wonder if I'm just clutching at straws. The thought of potentially losing my teeth (and spending my savings trying to not to!) has been a huge source of stress and conincides with perimenopause anxiety/ generally feeling like crap :(

Oh yes i am also very sad 😭😭 private dental treatment is expansive.

Dentist voice is echoing in my ears " you hv already lost 50% of bones😭😭😭😭😭😭".

Have a look at Gengigel mouthwash. I have improved my gum health using this and interdental brushes twice a day. I find electric toothbrushes too harsh for me (although dentists recommend them) so I'm using a Curaprox manual toothbrush. I also use Curaprox Enzycal 1450 toothpaste which has enzymes to boost saliva in the mouth. I had gum pockets at the start of this year (some were a level 3) due to menopause and receding gums. They are now gone. I have totally cut out alcohol and use a straw with acidic drinks like juice. The vitamins etc sound like a good idea too. I hope things improve for you.

hi OP re the coconut oil I just do a few minutes, i never manage 20 mins! Just swish a small amount (half a teaspoon is all I can manage) for a few minutes in the morning as I go about my day then spit in the loo, don't stress if you can't do a full 20 mins. I think that's too much pressure. Just a few mins is enough for me at least and makes a big difference. Make sure you are using virgin rather than processed

bamboosockmonster · 14/11/2024 10:20

I would also look at taking supplements that are good for bone health. vitamin D and vitamin K taken together improve bone density. The K helps absorb the D!
