Ds2 (6) had a pencil blowpiped into his eye on Thursday. He was seen by GP and eye unit at hospital.
He has an abrasion on his cornea.
The eye specialist we saw gave the impression that he would be fine by the next day.
However, nearly 72 hours later his eye is not fully open, reddish, lid swollen and vision blurry.
Should I get him seen again or is this quite normal?
Large hospital cannot advise as eye unit closed for the day and a&e unable to comment over the phone.

Not oozing, sticky or infected though.

Take him to A&E they will be able to help, if not with the eye, to control a possible infection.

TooTicky · 27/04/2008 11:54

A&E l;ong way to go though, and there is no infection.
Just want advice re vision/eye damage really.

lid swollen, not fully open, reddish... may be early symptoms of infection. I wouldn't recommend going to A&E for this, but... as had the pencil incident, better to err on the side of caution.

Did he had a blurry vision when the doctor sid he would be fine?

TooTicky · 27/04/2008 11:59

Doc inspected him - blurriness not discussed at the time - she just checked for foreign objects/deeper damage.
She did give the impression that he would be fine the next day though.

Ds2 had a pencil in the eye last year and had a scratched cornea - the doc gave him antibiotic eyedrops just to be on the safe side.

I would not be happy with the symptoms you describe - he needs to see someone again, I think. Of course, I'm not a medical person so feel free to ignore! Do you have a walk-in medical place (to avoid A&E)?

TooTicky · 27/04/2008 12:09

Local minor injuries has just been closed down

I had an eye problem the other week and my optician advised me to go to our local a&E dept and I have to say they were fairly useless in being able to do any eye related tests - the good thing they did do though was to make me an appointment for the next day at the eye clinic. So if the a&e dept is a long way away { and if they are anything like mine for eye problems it wouldn't be worth going today } and as your ds has alredy been seen by the eye clinic could you phone in the morning and get an urgent appt for tomorrow ?

Winetimeisfinetime · 27/04/2008 12:12

You can also buy antibiotic eyedrops over the counter now.

It definitely sounds like he needs to see someone again - just a case of deciding where to go and who to see. I have heard other mumnetters say that Moorfields Eye Hospital has a walk in clinic if you are anywhere near there

TooTicky · 27/04/2008 12:20

Thanks
No, not near Moorfields. Rural Wilts.

Might be worth phoning them though. They might be able to advise.

Update: went back to hospital, turned out ds2 had Y-shaped laceration on his cornea and had to have it stitched under GA.
Glad to be home!!
