Hi! Anyone else experience what looks like bumpiness on the side of the tongue. My anxiety has been through the roof. Please any insights.

Looks like pressure marks from your teeth, you can get it if you tend to clench your jaw and press your tongue into the roof of your mouth.

Tortonguen · 10/11/2024 20:50

It's a scalloped tongue. The tongue hads slightly swollen and pressed against your teeth, causing the marks. It's not dangerous but you might want to identify what makes your tongue do this. It's usually a mild reaction to food or drink.

Maze crisps/rose wine/some chocolate sets my tongue off

It could be 'geographical tongue'?

No it couldn’t

Your tongue is slightly inflamed and pressing against the sides of your teeth. There are many reasons why. PP has suggested slight intolerance to food, or it can be dry mouth or even low iron. If it's there all the time then maybe ask GP for a blood test, or take a watch n see approach by taking iron supplements or making a diary of what you eat or drink etc.

Is it something to be worried about ?

I have this and my dentist always notes it but never seems to worry or say it needs to be followed up

If you mean cancer etc then no, I don't think it's that. There are too many other reasons that need to be explored first.

However if it's because of low iron then you should actively do something about it as that can cause multiple other nasty symptoms and ill health but at least it is easily fixable. Same with oral hygiene (dry mouth or not cleaning effectively).

If it's due to food intolerances then either accept the scalloped edge or avoid the food. Have you been eating anything hot or spicy lately? I know Pringles affect me 😕

Why does your dentist keep note of
It? Did he say it was concerning?

@Edl

My Dentist does this too. Mine is worse than the OP but my Dentist says it's 'geographical tongue'. It can get better and worse. It can be a sign of inflammation. Mine gets aggravated with spicy foods (which I love). It's NOT a serious issue.

Ineffable23 · 12/11/2024 08:47

I have had this, it was a reaction to Corsodyl (sp?) mouthwash. I also sometimes get it if I get a mouth ulcer on my tongue.

HerbertVonDoodlebug · 12/11/2024 08:50

I have this. Nothing sinister but caused by tooth grinding/mouth clenching - usually in your sleep- dentist can make you a mouth guard which may help and there are exercises on YouTube that can help relax the muscles
