its making her cough like hell. she takes her inhalers through a spacer. is fine on the ventolin(salbutamol) still. but recently the GP switched her onto a new brown inhaler, same medication but different gases i think in the chamber.

she is beginning to hate taking her brown inhaler. i'm beginning to dread giving it to gher.

are there any others we could ask for, as it is stressing her out.

(will get her inhaler in a mo and double check i have put all the corrects name down for new/old meds)

sorry, meant CFC-free inhaler in the title

can you ask GP for another one or to go back on to Becotide?

misdee · 26/04/2008 22:14

apparently they are discontinuing the becotide one that she has had since she was a year old.

Brown inhalers are preventers, blue ones are relievers. A spacer is recommended for children as it can be difficult for them to use an inhaler. The brown one will be different medication as it is designed to be used at certain times of the day, whereas the blue one is for as and when necessary. The CFC free one, is that one that she does not need a spacer for? She opens the cap, places it in her mouth and breaths in?

tissy · 26/04/2008 22:17

my dd was the same on the new brown inhaler. Luckily, she seems to have grown out of her asthma, so we don't use it any more. Can you go back and ask to be given the Becotide again? Take her along and demonstrate the coughing! It's probably a different propellant, so maybe the GP could find a cheaper one with the same propellant?

PrettyCandles · 26/04/2008 22:18

Dd gets Clenil Modulite through a spacer, too. She has never had any other inhaler. At first she had no problems with it, but after a couple of months, still the first 'bottle', she started coughing and choking while breathing it, and hating the taste. When her symptoms started returning I realised that maybe the 'bottle' is empty, and I have been giving her just the propellant. (What would I know? It's our first time, and it still smelled the same.) We changed to a new bottle and the taste went and she no longer coughed it. If we don't shake it up well she still sometimes coughs and tastes it.

Perhaps that's the problem?

"discontinuing the becotide one"
will be watching this thread closely as I may be in the same boat with my DD

tissy · 26/04/2008 22:18

oh, didn't know they're discontinuing becotide,

Still try for a different propellant, I think

she takes both through a spacer unless out and about and i only have the reliever in my bag and no spacer.

she takes the brown one morning and night, two puffs each time. has been on becotide 100 for years. just been switched to clenil modulite 100 (same medication, different propellant), which is causing the coughing problem. I always make sure the inhalers are haken beofre use, and know when they are empty. she has had asthma since she was under a year old and is now over 8years old.

dd2 has always been on clenil modulaite and has no problems with it.

KM, thats what my GP said. they are calling in all asthma patients to discuss the new inahlers with them. fortunatly dd2 has been on clenil modulite 50 for about a year with no problems, its just dd1 thats having problems with clenil modulite 100.

yes the active ingrediant is the same (beclometasone dipropionate), i think it must be the new propellant.

we have had a different one before when we went to a different chemist, might see if thats in production still as that didnt cause a problem.

I would go back to your asthma nurse or GP and see if she can try a different preventer as that obviously doesn't agree with her. There are lots of different types, it may just be a case of finding another suitable one that affects her less.

RTKangaMummy · 26/04/2008 22:38

I HAVE JUST CHECKED MINE IT IS

QVAR 50 AEROSOL CFC FREE BECLAMETHOSONE DIPROPIONATE

IT IS MADE BY 3M {IVAX PHARMACEUTICALS}

There are different things you can try here, misdee. Becotide is being discontinued, as are all inhalers containing CFCs. As well as the HFA inhalers, there are also dry powder inhalers she can try. The asthma nurse is usually a good person to ask, as she may have smaple inhalers you and your dd can look at, to decide what's best.

Poledra · 26/04/2008 22:58

sample

misdee · 26/04/2008 23:14

dh had the diskhalers, found them quite hard work, but will get an appointment with the asthma nurse.

IVAX sounds familar.

OP posts:
Poledra · 26/04/2008 23:22

Diskhalers are a bit of a faff, but there are other ones out there that are easier to use, like the Diskus, Clickhaler, Turbohaler etc. I don't know which of these are best for children though.

misdee · 26/04/2008 23:27

i thought the turbohaler had been discontinued years ago (thats the one that looks like a bullet, or what that something else?)

loads of choice sounds like we should be able to find soemthing that works for dd1 instead of the clenil.

thank you!

OP posts:
shrooms · 27/04/2008 00:36

Nope, the turbohalers are still around - I use the symbicort.

Maybe she is sensitive to the propellent, as suggested, and switching to a powder inhaler or a different spray, eg seretide would be the answer? x
