how do they fix it

I had a nasal polyp in my early 20's. At the entrance to my left nostril. I got fed up with people thinking it was bogey and used to twiddle with it constantly. I was told it was a viral thing and had it removed under local anaesthetic. It was pretty painful having it done, well, actually the injection was the worst bit and then I laughed like a drain when the surgeon asked a nurse for a nasal tampon at the end!
It was worth having it done. Please don't be too worried. Not sure this will have helped but good luck

cornsilk · 27/04/2008 08:22

I have never heard of this. Am strangely fascinated by this thread.

southeastastra · 27/04/2008 12:02

oh no a nasal tampon sounds awful

South,
it's basicaly just to plug up your nose. There are a lot of blood vessels around there apparently. Not that bad, really and much better than a dangly bit of nose bogey.
It healed up very quickly and with no pain. Honest.

Tutter · 27/04/2008 13:31

oooh

i shall find you my thread

mine was a pyogenic granuloma

not a common polyp, oh no

Tutter · 27/04/2008 13:33

in case i can't find it, it stated off as a little blip

that i kept picking knocking

it ended up mahoosive - blocked the nostril

it was sliced off and my skin burned

the only bit that was agonising smarted a tad was the jab (actually there were a few) for the local anaesthetic

Tutter · 27/04/2008 13:37

it must have been in chat - can't find it

spub · 27/04/2008 20:07

Tutter,
The jags are grim, aren't they? I was trying not to upset poor South in case she's going to need it.
It was an eye-waterer though....

Tinker · 27/04/2008 22:05

So, really, it's like having piles up your nose?

Tutter · 28/04/2008 09:28

tinker - when i was tying to find my old thread i searched threads using "nasal piles" as i'm sure i used that very phrase

Tutter · 28/04/2008 09:28

in fact, i am Queen of Piles

have had them in 3 different places

what a title to hold eh?

treelover · 28/04/2008 09:30

they canoperate on it to remove, however, they can and do grow back

spub · 28/04/2008 09:50

Mine was done 15 years ago and not a sign of the little sod since. Hadn't thought of it as a nasal pile - more of a skingtag verucca type thing (so much more appealing )!

southeastastra · 28/04/2008 11:26

mine is quite high up, but i can see it. do you think if it's taken out it will stop the nasal drip thing i have?

i have constant funny metallic taste in my mouth too.

OP posts:
Tutter · 28/04/2008 11:42

that will be blood, sea

they bleed like buggery whenever they're knocked/scratched/picked

apparently made up of blood vessels, hence the bloody carnage - mine was pretty dramatic when it got going

lilolilmanchester · 28/04/2008 11:45

My Dad and brother both had them. Both had operations to remove them. For Dad, that was that. My bother is always incredibly nasal, I suspect he's got another one.

spub · 28/04/2008 12:17

They do bleed. Hence the nasal tampon......
If it's bothering you then I'd get it whipped out. What's the doctor saying re the surgery's effectiveness re the nasal drip and metallic taste?
BTW, the only time I've ever had a metallica taste in my mouth was when I was pregnant....Any chance...??

southeastastra · 28/04/2008 13:16

doesn't taste bloody. oh well. i have to wait for the results from xray then hopefully they'll whip it out. it's the constant pressure that's getting to me.

thanks for all your polyp stories i'm not alone!

Had one out a year or so ago right at the top too. They swabbed the skin with a local and then stuck a needle in with some more. The worst thing was seeing the needle coming up my nose, it didn't actually hurt! The whole thing only took about 10 mins and my nose didn't hurt afterwards so wouldn't worry if you decide to have it removed.

southeastastra · 28/04/2008 13:40

thanks goosey, we're you just in and out?

OP posts:
themoon66 · 28/04/2008 13:43

DH had his removed under general anaesthetic. It cured his snoring (a bit).

GooseyLoosey · 28/04/2008 14:14

Yep, it really was no big deal at all. I would however shut your eyes when the needle is being shoved up your nostril!

SniffyHock · 28/04/2008 14:20

My Mum had one removed last week under general. She was out later that afternoon and fine - next day she was just tired from the anesthetic.
