Palpitations and raised heart rate after eating

It's really getting me down - started on a back drop of gastric infection and post viral fatigue. Basically if I eat a meal quickly or if I have too much food I start to have palpitations about 10 mins after eating . I then get anxious and if that happens they rise to about 110-115 for about 10-15 mins . I feel ok after they have happened but have a slightly higher heart rate for a couple of hours afterwards .
I've had an ecg and 48 hr holter and no irregularities have been seen ( it happened on the day I had the tape on ) and it doesn't happen every time . But I have to eat really slowly and eat a few smaller meals in the day rather than 3 main which I find really difficult to organise .
GP not concerned. I'm wondering if it could be Cardio gastric syndrome and does anyone else have them , and if you do , what helps it . ? GP not till December to discuss !
When I have the high heart rate, obviously it makes me feel really anxious ! Especially when I'm on my own . Deep breathing does help bring it down .
Normally I do take lansoprazole but have cut down on this recently because of some absorption issues .
Any advice appreciated!

It wouldn't be histamine related, would it?

Sparxdislike · 07/11/2024 19:05

Do you have asthma? This happens to me. I had a tape and other than rises they expected they put it down to my medication.

Yes they are something I have had for a long time. I even went to A &E once on recommendation of 111, due to palpitations and chest pain. According to a cardiologist it's due to silent reflux. Nevertheless he sent me for a heart echo and 7 day ECG but no problems were found. I did take a PPI but obviously don't want to do that forever. I also have hypertension and my GP added a beta blocker, bisoprolol, to my other BP medication and the added benefit of that is it stopped the palpitations.
I do sympathise, it feels horrible and frightening to suffer with these symptoms.

Are you pre-diabetic or diabetic? Carbs can do this for sensitive people

I don't always get the palpitations but my heart rate does go up a bit after eating. I have long covid and POTS. I'm currently on propranolol for the POTS which reduces my heart rate overall. I do still get an increase but it's to a manageable, non-stress-inducing level (usually in the 90s, before the propranolol was 120 or more).

I did wonder that, but I don't think it is. I try to keep my histamine bucket low and it's not happened after eating anything particularly histaminey.

Heart rate, blood pressure and blood glucose go up after eating, it's nothing to worry about as long as within normal range. Try not to eat too quickly, pace yourself.

I don't think so. My diabetic test was bang on in the middle of the range recently. Interesting though .

Thanks for your reply. Does your heart rate go up other times or is it just when you're eating? I'm wondering about asking for propanolol but I don't feel like I need it every day .

@Wendolino thanks for the advice. Yes, it is really distressing.

@LBFseBrom yes I think I'm going to have to have five small meals a day. Try and make it fit into my lifestyle which is fairly quiet at the moment! I spend about half an hour eating a meal or longer sometimes if it's dinner!

@LBFseBrom the problem is it goes over 110 which feels awful
