He has been suffering with sleep problems most of his life. He had tonsillitis non stop every year growing up, and snored a lot. Fast forward to a few years after he married me, i noticed he made funny sounds in his sleep. His sleep quality was getting worse, and he was then diagnosed with sleep apnea after.

We were back, and forth with the gp for years to get to this point, and after waiting another couple of years, he was finally giving a cpap machine. Unfortunately it did absolutely nothing to help. Fast forward another few years, he woke up one morning with terrible chest pain. The pain scared him enough to make an appointment with a private consultant as we gave up with the gp. The consultant said what he really needs is surgery as he can see its more of a structural issue with his nose, and large turbinates causing the sleep apnea. He said we shouldn't have to pay out of pocket, and sent an urgent referral to the gp again. They did another sleep study test where it showed he now has severe sleep apnea with an ahi score of 60. He then said what can be done? Can he be referred to surgery? They said sorry no, if machine doesn't work, then nothing they can do. He also saw another consultant (NHS this time) who said it's just a case of 'bad luck' and pollution.

I cannot believe they refuse to do anything, and i am so worried he will die of a heart attack. This doesn't seem right? Has anyone been referred for turbinate reduction on the NHS? Or do we need to find a way pay for it privately? I feel we cannot wait any longer. He is not overweight, is on a good diet, and doing everything he can possible.

I don’t mean to frighten you and my husband has significant health problems which contributed a lot but in part untreated sleep apnoea has lead to a diagnosis of pulmonary hypertension. You really need to push this to make sure he gets all the tests he needs done to confirm exactly what treatment if any he needs, see another GP and nag, nag, nag. It shouldn’t be like this but the NHS is totally broken. Twice my husband would have died left to the NHS, it’s only because like you we went private that he got diagnosed in time.

I’m not suggesting this diagnosis will happen to your husband but he must get seen by someone who understands the condition fully and that’s easier said than done.
