Throbbing sharps pains in teeth/gums

Visited dentist recently as I was getting toothache/ throbbing pain.
Had appointment and further appointment for a filling, scale and polish - £315.
Treatment was a few weeks go now and keep getting intermittent throbbing pains still. Sometimes at site of filling, sometimes in teeth above, sometimes the other side.

How long should it take for things to settle down?

The dentist could not see anything else wrong when I have been and I was showing him one area I had throbbing pain but again could not see any concern but did suggest a hygienist visit as well which I'm yet to book. What will they do at this appointment?

Dentist said book to see him again in 6 months time.

I'm a bit loathed to go back sooner at the cost of more money. Obviously if things get a lot worse then of course I'll go back.

He did say the filling might not take as it was deep and in that case might need root canal/ tooth extraction.

So I guess I'm asking how long should I wait for things to settle or should I get booked in sooner?

I have changed to sensodyne toothpaste just in case it was an issue with sensitivity.

Also to add.
I can't fully eat where my filling is, not painful as such feels funny. Can't explain it. Just discomfort.

Sounds very similar to my recent experience. I'm very thankful that I have a private dental plan. Got in for an emergency appt as soon as it started bothering me. Was told one filling from 28 years ago was failing and needs replacing (doesnt quite cover the cavity any more). I'll have the appt on Friday ro replace the filling and the whole thing including a scale and polish will cost £124.
I must admit, that I can actually feel a very slight jagged edge to the composite filling in question, so I agree they are right (not that I'm a dental expert, but as far as what my own body is telling me) I can also see its not quite perfect in the mirror.

Might be worth investigating that as being the potential cause for you.

My symptoms have been identical to yours, exactly as you've described.
