"dairy is mucous forming" - is this true?

I have cancer and have been going to fairly hippy local cancer center. I saw the nutrionist this week and lots of her advice was very sound - eat a rainbow, eat lots of veg, drink lots of water, eat lots of nuts and seeds, variety important. She also gave me some easy-ish recipes to help make some tasty, quick but healthy food.

As I expected she also said dairy was bad. I don't drink milk, don't eat a great deal of cheese but do like yoghurt. Her argument, which I have heard many times before, is that dairy is mucous forming and coats the surface of the bowel impairing its ability to absorb nutrients. Is there any truth in this or is it a pile of old bollocks?

There are some studies linking breast and prostate cancer with dairy but I have neither.

don't know about "official" truth, but anecdotally:

dd1 is dairy intolerant. When she has dairy, she has rivers of snot pouring out of her nose at the slightest hint of a cold, or if she cries, etc. without it, normal quantities.

With dairy, she has loose, mucous-y poos. Without it, firm, normal poo and seemingly better absorption of nutrients (ie less colds than before, immune system seem to work better)

hth, and hope you are feeling well.

Think this is a persistent myth:
here and here. Latter interesting as it may the perception of mucus it changes.
Sorry you're not well. Hope things pick up for you.

I thought vegans also could get mucous? It can't just be from dairy products. If you are lactose intolerant then that is another matter. You could try drinking goats or soya milk - that might help.

I think dairy effects diff people in diff ways. Some no prob and some it does make more snotty.I think yog is best of all because its really easy to digest and full of good bacteria. So I wouldn't worry about yogurt as part of healthy diet. You would know yourself if dairy was a prob for you. Some children especially do better with less but it depends what you have as an alternative.Generally I'd cut down dairy when you have a cold but otherwise go for normal balanced diet.I worked in a health food shop(eating all the different types of chocolate!)and thats what I gathered from a few years of being there.Different people need different diets. No one rule for everyone...

I think Flowernat is right in that it affects people differently. I have never eaten any kind of dairy food as I don't like it and have terrible mucous and sinus problems - but maybe they would be worse if I did eat dairy.

Whenever I have seen an ENT specialist they alway tell me to cut down on dairy as that is what is my problems worse but don't seem to have a real response when I tell them I have never eaten it anyway so it can't be.

i know from experience that dairy makes my ezcema/asthma/hayfever worse but am not sure that it is a "proven" fact. I am an oncology nurse and have never heard of patients with either prostate or breast cancer being advised to avoid dairy.

Thanks. Plenty to ponder. I did do six-eight weeks without dairy about five years ago and it had absolutely no effect at all!

I hate milk because it makes me feel like I'm choking (an exaggeration but it is that kind of feeling). I didn't eat ice cream for about eight years but have now started eating it again without any problems so I really don't think I am lactose intolerant.

Ho hum!

no i don't think your lactose intolerant either. It comes up all the time about dairy.I can see why children, especially when they're really young can have trouble digesting copious amounts of cows milk because obviously its really meant for calves but some people benefit nutritionally from it.Sometimes people are too heavily reliant on it.I think i'm right in saying that goats is a bit more similar to humans and easier absorbed if you find you have mucous issues(!).Some people love dairy or hate it but on the whole you'll know where u stand by the way your body reacts when you eat/drink it.Like some need meat and others feel perfectly satisfied on veg diet.Go with flow ThingOne...whatever u thinks best(man)...Take care.

If you find that dairy makes you feel less good, then you might have a slightly greater difficulty than normal digesting it, so maybe reducing your intake is no bad thing. (It is certainly possible to be healthy without dairy, it's just a bit of a fannyaround). But the minute your fairly hippy cancer center advises you to stop your hospital treatment and substitute fruit juice enemas or sticking lit candles in your ears, run like fuck.
Hope you beat it, best of luck.
