Can whiplash be this bad?

Hi,

We were in my husband’s car on Wednesday when we were crashed into (on the passenger side where I was sitting) by a teenager who’d just started driving. It wasn’t particularly fast - pulling off from a traffic light over a roundabout and she came from somewhere else into the side.
I don’t recall there being any massive impact but I had a small amount of very mild shoulder pain at the time and the door was dented enough to mean it wouldn’t open fully anymore.

Since Friday I’ve had an awful pain in my neck/shoulder and it’s getting worse. Today my husband had to get me out of bed as I couldn’t get myself up without agonising pain and I couldn’t straighten my neck. Any very slight movement is triggering this horrible pain and I can’t move my neck properly to have a full range of motion. Looking down and turning to the left are the worst.

I’ve been off work sick for something unrelated and was due to go back tomorrow but I can’t drive safely in this state so wouldn’t be able to get myself to work. My job also involves home visits to clients (more driving) so I can’t do my job properly until this is resolved. Not to mention I’m going to look like I’m royally taking the mick!

I had a PE a year ago (and never experienced whiplash) so any horrific shoulder pain puts me on high alert. Can whiplash be this bad and is there anything I can do? The Dr’s were rang during the week who’re going to get a Physio to make contact on Monday but doesn’t help today or the issue around work.

Yes

When i had whiplash it was 6-8 weeks intense pain (no driving, painkillers, weekly osteo, rest, heat) 6months where if I overdid it or hit a draught I had the same problem.18 months where i consistently used a scarf. I upgraded both my pillow and scarf during this time. Although I do wish I'd engaged properly with physio therapy, I think I would have done better had i done that sooner.

If it was the other drivers fault, do engage proactively with their insurance to get decent compensation. Document any lose of wages, taxi costs (generally they will pay hire car or taxes but not both), ironing help cleaning etc

Yes. I had whiplash nearly 40 years ago and still have issues with it now.
