What is this virus??

Hi,

Started off with a cough that was now and again and then by the next day was coughing a lot of white chunky phlegm up with a tiny bit of green and vomiting a lot. Went to GP who said can hear mild bilateral wheezing on chest examination but I do have asthma so to be expected- has sent off a sputum sample to rule a few things out but thought everything would be fine with steroids- fast forward to today, I've woke up with muscle pains, can't stop vomiting, the phlegm I'm producing is now bright green and I feel like absolute hell, I'm so exhausted, breathless my throat is hurting so much off coughing and so is my chest. Has anyone else had this?? (Added GP notes onto here)

The doctor's notes say they think it's asthma, aggravated by a viral infection, and possibly a bacterial secondary infection.

There's a lot of covid around at the moment, so that's what I'd expect it to be.

I hope you can take plenty of rest, and that it doesn't last too long

Oh that's perfect thank you so much!! When I'm coughing sometimes my breathing sounds like crackling almost like rice crispies and I'm vomiting a lot too so I was so worried it could have been something like pneumonia😭😭 I guess it would make sense a potential bacterial infection on top as that would be what the green stuff is I'm coughing up I guess?? Would it still show up as bacterial infection on the test they've done if at the time I was only coughing up clear phlegm?? So sorry for the million questions!! Xx

I'd be phoning nhs24 and asking for advice. If you're having difficulty breathing it could well be the start of pneumonia, which can be serious.

Hope you feel better soon.

I did give them a ring :) just waiting for a call back, they said within the hour.. I'm not severely breathless tbh I can still walk up and down the stairs which is a good thing (just wouldn't be able to run up and down) it's just when I'm coughing I get very breathless, could be due to the fact there's a lot of phlegm etc but getting checked out can't help. I guess it's better safe than sorry especially with asthma. Thanks for your help

Yup you're right, better safe than sorry.

Do you have one of those clip on finger oxygen monitors? I have one now. Didn't have one before when my mum was loaded with the cold. Didn't know her oxygen levels were so low she got hospitalised on oxygen for five days because it was a full on massive chest infection. They just kept fobbing us off for a week but she was ill. Eventually someone came out and she was taken to hospital. Thank goodness. She's recovered now but as you say, better safe.

They should come out and sound your chest when you tell them you are struggling to breath at times. The annoying thing is that the pharmacies all shut early so you might not be able to get the meds. That really annoys me. The hospital pharmacy should be open 24/7 so anyone can go in.

I haven't got one anymore it broke when I moved house! But taking my peak flow and surprisingly it's higher than it usually is GrinGrin I will be getting one though!! 111 have gave me an appointment for tomorrow at the nearest walk in centre! She was so lovely on the phone!

Just in case anyone is looking for an update, I've just been to the walk in next to me and was all done and dusted within 20 minutes of arriving. She said she thinks it could be flu or Covid even though I only had Covid last month.. wheezing is minimal so she thinks my steroids are helping a lot even though I don't feel like it, she can't hear crackling or anything on my lungs so she said she's happy to say pneumonia doesn't cross her mind at all.. she said expect to feel unwell for up to a week or so more and for the cough to stay for a few weeks even but she would expect within the next week for me to be back up and able to do most of my usual daily activities again..

I'm fed up of being unwell now but hopefully in a few days I'll feel better

Hi,

think we have this.. son (6) diagnosed with chest infection. Son (2) was admitted to hospital with severe croup. It’s a nasty one! X

My son had it too! It's been so brutal, I hope your little ones are feeling better now. I had a sputum sample which came back positive for an infection this morning even though I've been checked twice (once being yesterday) and chest has sounded completely clear!

Thank you, thankfully they are past the worst of it and just left with a bit of a cough and snotty noses. My youngest has had croup a few times but this was the worst I’d ever seen him with a stridor was so scary. It was the same for him in hospital one minute they said he had a wheeze in his lungs next minute it was clear. Very strange but very nasty virus! Hope you and your son are on the mend x

@watermelonsugar11. What infection did the sputum come back positive for? Wondering if my DH ought to do a test!

This is what I've found on my NHS app- if you can make any of this out hahaConfusedGrinGrin I would definitely get him to do one though, my chest was supposedly clear to listen to but still had an infection x

Hi Op, hope you're feeling better? The GP notes confirm you have or had Strep A infection. The lab advise 10 days of penicillin to treat it. Or 5 days of ceflaxin if allergic to penicillin.

watermelonsugar11 · 11/11/2024 21:21

Hi @HoffiCoffii I'm feeling a lot better thanks!! Still have the annoying cough and a little bit of phlegm but back to all of my usual activities thankfully!! Oh that's crazy, I mean it would explain the vomiting etc and why the gp kept saying my throat was very red and sore but it was only sore when I coughed!
