No, not normal. When I found a breast lump, I was seen at the hospital the following week, and three days later I was in having it taken out.

Go back, see another doctor and ask for a referral to the hospital.

and yes he did feel the lump to, so knew it was there

Breasts can become lumpy at different times during your menstrual cycle, so I presume that's what he's thinking of - but that kind of lump comes and goes, and presumably as you've had it for two months you'd know if it was doing that.

Please go back.

lackaDAISYcal · 25/04/2008 18:39

TheFallenMadonna · 25/04/2008 19:31

No. Not normal. I was referred to the breast clinic straight away and seen there 10 days later. Is there another GP at the practice you can see?

JammyQueenOfTheSewers · 25/04/2008 19:32

Sorry to hear about this Trace. Sounds really bad that you have to wait - is it worth querying with your GP to see if it's possible to bring it forward?

shouldbeworking · 25/04/2008 19:33

When I found a lump I was asked to go back in 2 weeks not 6 so I was at a different stage of my cycle.
Then gp did refer me to hospital for a scan. It was about 2 years ago but i found the lump I think at Xmas and it was March time before I had a scan and mamogram.
My gp said he didn't believe that my lump was anything sinister so I wouldn't be an urgent referral hence the wait. Turned out he was right ...just a cyst but I suppose occasionally he may get it wrong. I don't know how easy it is to distinguish the sinister from the harmless just by touch.

Most breast lumps (even when they are clinically benign-feeling) should be referred and seen promptly by the nearest breast clinic for assessment which may include and ultrasound and biopsy.

Either ring the GPs secretary and ask if can be referred or see another GP. 6 weeks is a long time for you to be worrying.

shouldbeworking · 26/04/2008 15:27

Unfortuately in my case the gp said that the funds weren't available for every woman with a lump to be referred as an urgent referral. He had to make a judgement which, in his opinion, could wait. As I don't have the means to go private I had little choice but to trust his judgement and wait.

paddyclamp · 27/04/2008 17:42

Bloody hell! I'd go back and demand to be referred to the hosp.

9 out of 10 lumps are NOT cancerous but making women wait like that puts them through hell!

I've had 7 breast lumps (all benign thankfully) but have had urgent referrals cos my mum had breast cancer. Each time the GP has said he felt pretty sure the lumps were nothing, but as he put it, the cost of mistakes in his game is very high!
